How many 4 to 6 inch bluegill should I stock in a new 1/4 acre pond to have adequate spawn next spring? Is 20 enough?

Hey John,
Welcome to PBF!
Any other species of fish in the pond now? Plan to stock any other species of fish next spring or summer?
Again, welcome. Looking forward to hearing about your pond.

I would plant broodfish of a ratio 2 females to one male and about 4 males and 8 females in a quarter acre pond.
My 1/10th acre hatchery pond produces all the fry I want with 1 male and two females.
Keep in mind you will get up to four spawns over the year.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I have stocked about 60 six inch CC, 100 two inch BG and 100 two inch RES in addition to 300+ FHM, 200+ Gambusia, and the 20 four to six inch bluegill. Next spring, after the BG spawn, I plan to stock about 30 fingerling LMB. I have been feeding pellets all fall. NW Arkansas

Wasn't aware you already had fish in the pond...

Your 60 CC will become pellet hogs and occupy a lot of the pond's carrying capacity. Fish a lot of them out when they become harvestable and the fishery will develop a stronger BG-LMB community. If you don't aerate, the pond could soon become overloaded with fish and be a candidate for a fish kill.

Harvestable is about two pounds, correct? Ordinarily I don't keep wild caught ones any smaller than that.

Still waiting for a 2 pound bluegill and my pond is managed for trophy male only bluegill. Edit: My bad. Thought you were talking about bluegills not catfish.

Cecil, Take your cold meds and go to bed! John, Best size to harvest CC is 2 to 3 pounds. After that they develop a lot of the fatty yellow meat which doesn't taste that great and needs to be removed. Around that size they also become more of a threat as a predator. Bill D.

Yes, I was referring to CC at two pounds, not BG. Getting the CC to two pounds will probably take until the spring of 2017. I might get two pound BG here, if I managed for it. Lots of difference in fish growth between Indiana and Arkansas.

Cecil,
Take your cold meds and go to bed. Can't go to bed. Have to sit up in a recliner or my lungs get congested. Trying to get tired enough to fall asleep!

In my experience, they feed heavily in 75 to 85 degree water and grow at an incredible rate.

I will watch them (CC) closely, but in six weeks since I stocked, they have only grown an inch or so.

Cecil,
Take your cold meds and go to bed. Can't go to bed. Have to sit up in a recliner or my lungs get congested. Trying to get tired enough to fall asleep! Cecil, I've had some terrible bouts with chest colds & even pneumonia so you have my empathy! Two things I found that helped: First, drink LOTS of fluids, especially water. Second, eat some very spicy foods that will flush out your nasal cavities. How spicy depends on your tolerance, but if it doesn't make your nose run a lot more it isn't hot enough! Hope you get better soon!

I will watch them (CC) closely, but in six weeks since I stocked, they have only grown an inch or so. They won't grow much if at all in water that is cooler than 70°°F. If you catch any at all, don't release them, no matter how small they are - you will have a hard time re-catching them. As for stocking ratio, it all depends on your goals for the pond. i.e. managing for large bass, large BG or a "balance".

How do the CC in the Red River near Fargo, ND get so large (a few over 30#, 20# common)? The water temperatures there may never reach higher than about 70 degrees, and if it gets that warm, it is not for long. Mine are still feeding on top some and the water temp is mid 50's.

John, Here is blurb from the Mn DNR. Seems cool water CC grow very slowly but live very very long. " research project on Red River catfish conducted in 990-91 by Minnesota and North Dakota, with help from Manitoba, has yielded some interesting facts. Red River channel catfish grow slowly and live long. Researchers found fish up to 26 years old—twice the life expectancy of catfish in the southern United States. In the Red, as a general guide, 20-year-old fish weigh about 20 pounds."
