We planted quite a few bushes some 8 years ago or so as part of the WHIP program. Many did not make it due to deer browse, but a number of the hazelnut bushes are all grown up and producing nuts. I spent some quality time this past weekend harvesting. The timing was good as many were already falling out of the husks. I got about 3 1/2 five gallon buckets-worth.
I'm not so sure that this is going to turn out to be a good plan. They are so danged small and it's gonna be a lot of work getting any appreciable amount of nut meat. We will see. First, to dry them out.
I've already googled and you-tubed how to handle and prepare. Anybody got any secrets on how best to cure and crack?

Grettski, this post screams for sarcastic remarks. However having put huge amounts of restraint on myself lately, I'm passing on the urge to be nasty. However I must say those husks are sure different looking and interesting. Also I didn't know Hazels grew this far north.
Your nuts may seem small but them are some good lookin buckets.

That's awesome! Sorry I'm no help, but can't wait to see how those Filberts turn out!

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

I would have some too if it weren't for the deer and some very poor brush hog driving skills. Ran over my two remaining trees last fall while daydreaming about work.
