I have just started managing a pond in the Texas Panhandle I saw an ad for pond fertilizer and was wondering what does the fertilizer do (is it Food for Fish or plants) ?

Fertilizer in a pond is for the fish. Plants grow too well without it. Fertilizer is added to a pond with few plants ( so that you do not exacerbate the plant growth ) in order to increase the growth of phytoplankton. This gives zooplankton more to eat, increasing the growth of zooplankton, giving small minnows more to eat, increasing the numbers of small minnows, giving the bass more to eat, increasing the numbers and size of your bass.
So you, by fertilizing, are increasing the basis of your food chain; which affects the whole food chain. Also, the increase of phytoplankton clouds the water so that less vegetation grows.
The water should be green enough that a white object disappears at about 18 to 24 inches below the surface.
