For some unknown reason the multitude of Barn Swallows that control the mosquito population on our property left the area. This occurred a least 2 weeks prior to their normal seasonal departure window. There still plenty of mosquitoes so their food source is intact.
What does it mean?

Have ta agree, this has been THE weirdest weather yr I can remember. I
Do nature a favor, spay/neuter your pets and any weird friends or relatives.

Hummingbirds showed up a week ago at our place, the fall migration has begun.

The barn swallows disappeared here almost 2 weeks ago. They had a nest full, and within a week after they fledged, they were gone.

My bank swallows never stick around long. They seem to have their young early and once the young hatch and fly they seem to be gone.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Hummers are hitting feeders in my backyard in Lincoln, we have healthy populations of Tree Swallows at the farm - they're still thick, not sure if they migrate or not. Imagine they must?

Our Swallows leave on or before Aug 28th every year and this year right on time.

No wrens during the winter here, but I DO see bluebirds. No bats either.
Had an Eastern Towhee in the crabapple tree this a.m.
I've seen robins in Jan/Feb here.

Winter seems to be the only time I see bluebirds at my place. Go figure.

Still waiting on the dang GBH to leave! Bill, this is the first year I can remember that I never saw a GBH or their tracks around either pond. Probably explains why I've got lots more frogs than ever before. I do see GBH's in drainage ditches and such driving down the roads so I know they are around.

Never saw that first GBH all summer, and the frog population is as large now as I've ever seen it.

My wife chased our GBH off twice this morning, I will be glad when he is gone. My bullfrog population is way down but leopard frogs numbers are up.

Haven't seen a GBH much here this year either. More frogs this year than ever.

I know where your missing GBH are! I read up on what I can do to keep them away and, if I understand it correctly, it is perfectly legal to harass GBH. My form of harassment amounts to a 22 LR 1 foot to the left or right. I have not fired a shot in 3 or 4 weeks. All I do is walk on to the deck with my 22 and let them see it. They immediately take off over the tree line. If they see me only, without the 22, they don't move. These fellas are pretty smart!

This is the first year since putting up boxes that we didn't have swallows. Bluebirds were abundant, but they left early. We saw them returning a couple weeks ago. Lots of birds on the move. We did see a couple warbler varieties this weekend, and the grosbeaks were present in really good numbers. We saw none of them this spring. We have resident towhees but seldom see them other than in dense woods.
One bird I really miss is the whippoorwill. Does anyone hear them anymore?? They used to be common in our area but have vanished.

If you scare them bad enough they will barf up their tummy and could stock your pond with un wanteds. We have been able to sneak right up on them by using the water fall as our sight block and noise block. Scared the GBH so bad it puked and flue away. Talk about stink! What surprised me was how many live fish were flopping around in the grass. GBH bucket stocking at its finest. Cheers Don.

Every morning I go out to feed, as soon as I reach the dock he flies off. The question is how soon does he return after I leave? Likely immediately  Also the same, bullfrog numbers way down, leopard frogs abundant!
