I am curious -- those of you who are raising shiners in small ponds - how do you know how much to feed them ? (I presume you feed them). I heard somewhere you can actually over feed and have mortality that way .....?? If there is some formula - so much food for so many shiners - how do you folks know how many you have in a pond if it is thousands ... or ten of thousands -- do you just guess at the number and feed accordingly?
At least I don't lie awake at night wondering about such things ...... at least not yet

There's not much way to tell how many. The often stated answer is to feed fish what they will consume in 15 minutes. In a heavily stocked pond that could get $$$$.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I just mix in some 2mm feed with the larger 6mm feed that is primarily going to the perch. The shiners nail the 2mm feed every day. Its not much but they do very well on it. They will feed on the 6mm as well like its a big game of keep away.
I think as long as your breeding stock gets good feed and populates well your good.
