I have a small pond in Atlanta. Pond was cleaned out to a depth of 9' two years ago. Dam repaired last fall. Began restocking program this spring. Added bass fingerlings this June. Blue gills are being fed Aquamax 500. In this regard all is going well. My problem is this, there is a brown film with bobbles covering a good bit of the pond surface. The pictures were taken yesterday. We have not had any rain for the last three weeks except for one short shower. I have had this pond for over 20 years and have never experienced this problem. Anybody have an idea about what might be causing this condition??

I see what looks like an oily film in one photo...are your fish spawning currently? I get what you have from time to time. I think it's a combination of organic decomp on the pond bottom, pollen, and simple scum blown into the pond. I'll bet it clears when you get a rain.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Had a pretty good spawn. Three different size fry and what seem to be large numbers. Spotted a group of what were the bass fingerling and was amazed at how much they had grown in just 4 weeks. Thank you for your observation and I hope you are right about the rain.

Any update on this? I'm in Forsyth county and experiencing the same thing in a 1/2 acre pond. Just noticed a dead catfish today so I hope this isn't the start of something bad.

That stained water and surface film looks normal this time of year for this part of Georgia. I've fished a few bodies of water the past week and all 4 of them had the same water color and junk on top. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the dog days of Summer (heat) and the lack of precipitation are factors in what you're seeing with your pond.

It is unsightly but if anything like previous years it will pass. What is your water situation like? If you've a pump you could suck in from your pond through the pump and turn it right around and shoot it back into the pond to agitate the surface. Alternatively if you've a garden hose and a strong source at your house you could try at route.
