I have a five horse Honda motor that I want a trash pump for. Where would I buy just the pump? Thanks.

This is really strange a pond forum and nobody knows where to buy a pump.

I really don't know.

Must be only one Honda motor/pump combination.

I have a Honda on my pressure washer... what gives?

What do you know about the motor?

I know where to buy a pump. I also know that there are short shaft engines, long shaft engines, splined shaft engines, tapered shaft engines, threaded shaft engines, keyed shaft engines, 3/4" shaft engines, 25mm shaft engines, and every once in awhile, 5/8 and 7/8" shaft engines. And those are just some of the choices common to 5-6 hp engines. In some cases, it can be cheaper and easier to simply purchase a new pump/engine combo.

Nevertheless, I would begin my search at Northern tool. May give you an idea of what's generally available.

That's the classic search mode for a DIY, but I would never buy anything from NT.

Neither would I. And I feel the same way about Tractor Supply. But, like you stated, both are commonly available outlets for the general public.

Once you begin buying in earnest, you discover just how much money you wasted by not knowing any better.

If one were to start looking in earnest, where might they start looking? Nobody like to waist money.

My experience this year when I was shopping for pumps is that it's cheaper by a long shot to buy a used pump/motor off of craigslist/local for sale ads/etc than any other method. I bought 2 3" trash pumps complete with suction and pressure hoses, valves, etc, for less than you can buy just the pump (without the motor) off of NT or HF's site.

It's not rocket science to make sure you're not getting a lemon. Make sure they start and run well from a cold start and the pump has good pressure and volume of water movement, as compared to what it should have new. If the seller wants to start the pump up without water in the pump and says it's not a big deal, move on, because it is.

What are you looking for in particular, Brian? I tend to use big box farm stores, (and Northern tool and hydraulic)as an idea generation source, or reference to see what's available. Then I begin shopping price, including online and from suppliers to my business. I usually get the best deal this way, but certainly not always. I'm actually working on a project right now that's unfamiliar to me, and spent the morning walking the aisles getting ideas. Then I made a couple purchases at my local mom and pop farm stores....they were the same price as the big guys.

Now if Northern tool and TSC had a foundry and could pour cast iron, I might seek their help for the next stage of the project.

My favorite item of illustration is a gallon of Cutrine Plus. TSC has it everyday for $59.99 a gallon, while Rural King has it for $34.99. $25 bucks a gallon higher?? For the same product??

I'm not particular, I am always on the lookout for things that make my life better and the job easier. And if I can save money doing it, all the better!!

I recently bought a 2" semi-trash pump from TSC. I know that Champion brand isn't top shelf, but I have had good luck with their generators. And for the amount of use it will see, it will do ok. Plus I bought it online and had it delivered to a TSC 5000 miles away for a family member to pick up. Sparky is spot-on about all the different shaft sizes. Lots of variables.
