Received 33 (ordered 30) LCS from Brian Zimmerman today, all arrived alive and what appeared to be in good shape. I seem to recall someone asking how he shipped fished so I snapped a few pictures. They were about 1" long and he boxed and shipped on Monday morning. He seemed to think they will get to 4-6" by the spring in a new, non-predator pond, does this seem to be inline with what others have observed?

very cool
I stocked 4 LCS in Jan that size and they are 4-6 inches already I was amazed. I am waiting for zachs to get more as they are local here in town to get more. We have had a dry spring so ditches have not had them for him to collect. thansk for sharing.

Awesome! I put about 25 in last spring and have not seen them since. I would think if they spawned the black stripe on the side of the young ones would be something I could spot. But I'll have to wait and see if I spot the larger adults. Or maybe they didn't survive the winter... (everything else did make it) We'll see. I thought my PK shrimp were gonners but they are alive and kicking smile

I may just put another batch of 25 in this year for kicks although my RES from last year might be old enough to pick off the little ones.

I stocked my LCS in June of 2009 at around 1.5" in size. I never saw a sign of them again until April of 2012 when I started seeing 6"-8" adults cruising the shallows and then doing their spawning gig. Really the only time I see them is in the spring when they come shallow to spawn. Otherwise, they seem to stay in deeper water.

In a new pond such as yours, I could easily see them being 4-5 inches if not larger by spring. My largest LCS are in excess of a foot long now. As a side note, LCS are extremely winter kill tolerant from my experience. This past winter, I had an almost complete winter kill of all game fish. HSB, SMB and CC and lost my larger RES and RBS. My LCS came through just fine...

Thanks for the notes regarding growth rates of LCS, quite excited about starting that population.

LCS are cruising the banks, captured some underwater video. I am surprised how much we see them, everyday, and how they are not easily spooked.

Ben, somehow I missed these videos of LCS. Thanks for posting. I clearly have not seen anything like this in my pond. I may have to restock and see if they make it. I'd love to have these as part of my forage mix.

canyoncreek, I am amazed how much I see them. Every time we walk the pond, pretty much everyday, we see the LCS. It makes me happy as they were the most expensive. The growth we are seeing is amazing, it looks as if they have tripled in size in a month. I need to net a few to get some measurements. Generally we see them in the same spot but we often see a few cruising the shoreline. We have not found any dead ones and we are doing quick counts of 25 so our numbers are still up.

Wanted to give an LCS update. I had not seen them for a while so I was fearing the worst as we just had a major algae bloom a few weeks ago. I was walking the pond yesterday and saw the RES hanging out in the shallows and to my surprise mixed in with them were the LCS. They were schooling with the RES all around the pond. They are already in the 4-6" range, same size as the RES, which made them harder to identify. What would be a good way to capture a few to check true lengths?

LCS are not easy to reliably sample and capture. I have caught a few in wire traps while trapping for other fish. I have been told that they will move into traps if water is pumped through the trap from back to front, but I have never tried this method.

So at around 2 months since you received them at 1". They are possibly already at the 4-6" growth. That's amazing how quickly they have grown.

Bill, that would make sense as they really liked to hang out at the inflow of the pond when water was running.

Snakebite, I would have never guessed. I really want to catch at least one to get a good measurement, looking through water can be deceiving. I know the RES are in the 4-6" range which is what I am basing it on as they swim together. With that said, proof is in the pudding, so I really need to catch one.

Wanted to give an update on the LCS stocking. A few days ago we found (dead) an adult LCS in the pond outlet. I was not thinking and did not get a measurement, I would guess it was 8-10" long. Today the kids found 3 LCS caught in the straw blanket netting, all would have been born last year and are at the 4" mark. The knife in the picture is 4.8". I would say the LCS stocking was successful which I find surprising as the pond conditions were far from optimal, the initial stocking count was 30 at 1", and I had an introduction of LMB prior to stocking.

This is encouraging as I added 12 a couple years ago but have not seen any. I need to set some minnow traps!

Reviving this old post to see if anyone has something to add about LCS. While SetterGuy keeps hoping his elusive HSB will show up someday, I'm still hoping some of my original 25 LCS will show up. I have never seen any black striped yearlings as I had hoped. I did get a mature adult get caught in a big seine net about 2 years ago, so there is at least one in there smile

If the adults are still alive and this is the upcoming 4th spring since they went in they should be about like the picture above by now then! I stocked from the same source and at the same size as Ben A did.

I know they need clean/clear water and vegetation to lay eggs on and my pond tends stay in a bloom in the warm weather months and I have zilch for vegetation for a variety of reasons.

It might be time to set up a my son's GoPro camera as an underwater 'game camera' and see what I can find cruising around!!

I didn't see the hint Bill C gave about flowing water through a minnow trap. I will have to try that as well.

Bumping this post again

Anyone else having success with LCS? I wanted to share Ben's pictures and encourage others to try to get these useful forage fish established in their ponds. Is Ben still on the forum?

If others have success or can possibly share stocking size LCS with others this would be great.

I have an established population in my YP/SMB pond. I know because a bunch washed out the main drain tube several times a few years back. Since I installed a water control box, I no longer seem to have fish wash out the pipe. I did find one large one dead in this pond also. I moved 19 of the ones that washed out to my 3rd pond which still only has FHM in it (+ the added LCS), but I cannot confirm that the LCS survived or spawned in this 3rd pond.
