I twice tried to stockpile some bluegill using a small collapsible fish basket tied to a low, overhanging tree branch. Both times, a raccoon pulled it from the water, opened the spring loaded door, and removed the fish.

Nice cage and dock,Tbar. Diggin' that porch swing!

I love it when a water snake squeezes through the mesh on a fish basket and remains in there until you unknowingly yank it out of the water. Even better however, is when they try and escape and get caught half in, half out. That's usually good enough to raise the hair on your arms.

The cage worked great! Ended up with 20 BC in the basket. Wife and I consumed 8, 8 went to the freezer and 4 remain as test subjects in to see how they do for a week. Grand kids are going to love it!!! Oh and.....if I get any snakes I will be sure to send them to the Ambassador of Over Regulation. smile

I originally wanted to make it out of 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" PVC but couldn't find this fitting in those sizes at the local big box stores. All they had was 1".

In hindsight I am glad I went with 1". Its plenty rigid and the netting makes even more so. Also, the 1" conduit clamps I bought to attach to the dock worked perfectly.

Interesting observation......

Some friends came over yesterday to fish and we caught 24 BC and one very fat 1-1/2 pound bass. When we pulled the cage up to clean the fish yesterday afternoon there were thousands of freshly hatched 1-2 day old fry hanging in the plastic netting which seemed odd with all those carnivores present. Went to photograph them this morning and the fry are gone.

FWIW: 5 BC had been in the cage for 4 days and the fat just caught that morning bass was dead.

You can get those PVC corner fittings in small sizes from Pentair (aka Aquatic Ecosystems).

Doesn't Stoney Creek still have pvc cage fittings?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Stoney creek (Easy Pro) is probably another place to get those fittings.

Yeah I see that a lot. I've had fry swim into a few of my long-term cages and remain there until they grow too large to escape.
