Pond developed a leak which was fixed in October 2014. Great water color at that time which was about 2 feet low. While pond was low I added about 20 green Christmas trees. Pond refilled in January 2015 and has been a coffee color ever since. About March 2015 noticed a black tint in water that will scatter when a bait hits the water or a fish moves. Haven't seen any dead fish or odors. Prior to this the water color has been really good. Any ideas?

Get a small mesh net and see if you can net some of the black school. Post a picture of the individual critter so we can ID it if you can't.

Went out to pond today. Water is still a coffee color and the black stuff in the glass still blows with the wind like a black cloud. I'm at a loss. The fish seem to be doing fine. Haven't seen any floaters.

Has there been a fire and that's carbon particles?

I think I would send a sample to a lab.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Stir in some baking soda and see if it clumps and settles out.

I have found every time I put even one Christmas tree in when the water gets to 65-70 I get a alga bloom. I only have been putting one in a year or so no more then that. I have about a million gallons in my pond.

Cheers Don.

Could it be chemicals on the Christmas trees? There has not been any fire in this area to my knowledge.

Makes me wonder if they spray on a fire retardant on these trees.
