to the greatest country in the world. Sometimes we all rant and rave about one thing or the other, I guess it's just human nature. Today is so special because it marks the beginning of the best democracy in history. We in the USA are sooo blessed that we take for granted how wonderful we have it. We don't need to bribe someone to get a drivers license. We can get a passport anytime we want one. We get to go to the grocery, church, a sporting event or just about anywhere without fear of being unjustly arrested or bombed. I saw a documentary the other day about a country in Africa. One segment was about a three yr old kid that was so malnourished that his leg muscles wouldn't allow him to stand. We wake up, have a cup of cappuccino and two donuts or a big plate of eggs, bacon and hash browns and just take it for granted. So today and night when we celebrate this special day, lets all try to remember all our bessings and be cordial and kind to everyone we encounter. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.
Just an ordinary AMERICAN, Lord, I love it!!

Yes, and we need to make sure it stays that way. Freedom is not a one time win that we got a couple hundred years ago so now we can relax. There are constant powers that attempt to chip away at our freedom and just because our forefathers won freedom for us does not mean we can relax and assume it will always be there with no effort.
Greece was the birth place of democracy and the rights of individual citizens. Look at the mess they are in now. Freedom is not free. It is a constant battle to maintain it.
But there is no other place I would rather have as a permanent residence than the USA, for many good reasons as you point out.
Happy Independence Day! Going to watch some fireworks from our friendly Canadian neighbors soil at Niagra Falls.

Ditto. Having Fatih here, and seeing his perspective on things that we take for granted, sure opens my eyes to many things.

Bob-O and Scott, my experience with Fatih was the same as yours. I silently witnessed one moment that will forever reinforce my appreciation of things here I might have taken for granted before. It was good for me to get outside my little cloistered world.

Agree with all of the above. We are so blessed. Quite often I ask myself, how did I get so lucky to be born in this great country, and have all of the opportunities that we take for granted. Haven't come up with an answer yet, but I thank God every day...
Just do it...

Great thread and posts!
This journey Fatih and I are on has changed my life in many ways, and in many ways because of spending it with a complete stranger from another country, especially Turkey!
I've been blessed to have had many of the moments Al speaks of and I know Fatih has had those moments as well. And what's great about Fatih is that he's very open and honest and we have discussed them all!
The ups, the downs, the joys and the disappointments. But the greatest moment for me is when he recently said that it's no longer about the fishing, but the experiences he's had from the people we've met and the completely different way of life from each.
He is finally seeing the forest through trees and smiling more and more all the time! He will be a different daddy to that little boy he is expecting soon, because of this journey he's been on.
Only in the great U.S.A!
God bless America!
