I took the advice to cut back some trees from around the pond and in the last week this stuff has popped up almost all the way around the edge. It sure didn't take long after some rays hit the water for plant life to pop up, just hoping it's not to invasive. Let me know if the pic isn't adequate for id and I'll take some more

I looked through all the pics on there and didn't recognize it in any of them, it's very twiggy looking with no leaves. Here's another pic of it in the water

O.K., no leaves. Or at least nothing that you can id as leaves.

Next question is do you have any trees within 20' - 30' of the pond? Could it be roots from the trees getting into the pond?

In the first picture that you posted in this thread, what is the green stuff that is in your hand on the right side of the picture?

Never thought of roots, my whole pond is surrounded by big trees. The dark green stuff is something else, that looks like the elodea ( missed that was even in there!) would the sudden influx of sunlight cause the tree roots to start to grow twords the surface? There has always been a patch of this in the pond but in the last week since all the trees were removed it has almost totally lined the rim of the pond

What kind of trees? When you say the trees were removed, how were they removed? i.e. cut down stumps left there, or stumps ground out, stumps ripped out with an excavator, stumps left and treated with Tordon, etc.

Mostly maple trees, the ones I removed were small and over hanging the pond. I just cut them and left the stumps because they are in the water right now from the water being so high. Most of this growth is on the other bank where I just trimmed branches back and the trees on that side are 15 ft from the water but they are big, 60-80 ft tall and the tops of the canopy still hang over by the pond. Going by the fact the roots typically extend out as far as the canopy they very well could be roots protruding out of the steep sides of the pond. That would explain why they are not green. I'll keep an eye on them the next few weeks and see what happens.

Is the elodea anything to worry about? I've got some corkscrew val coming next week that I am going to try to establish in the pond before less desirable plants take over though I'm not sure how the val will take our winters.

If it was my pond, considering how invasive eloda is, I would kill it before introducing a new plant because the treatment for the eloda might also kill the new plants as well.
