We're considering adding 5-6 French Rouens to our big puddle flock.

Has anybody had any experiences with these, or any other possible options as far as resident water fowl? The pond is 11 acres, so it'll handle the 5-6 birds, but we're not wanting to get locked in to another group of birds we need to cage at night.

A friend in Arkansas had several ducks and Canada geese on his small pond. The Indian Runners (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) were pretty cool to watch when they stand tall and run. His Rouen's were simply beautiful to look at. His Canada geese were outstanding watch dogs...almost as good as a pissed off Peacock.

My friend never had an FA problem, but the ducks did quite a number on the shore line where they liked to peck at and dig for insects. About once every 2 years he'd have to use a backhoe to restore the torn up shore.

We have 2 Canadians that show up early every spring, and they do earn their keep while they're here. Other geese, herons, and egrets are all attacked and chased off our pond. When we see the male roaming around alone, we start looking for the nest. So far we've found them all.
