Good Morning
I have been referred to you by Canadianpond.ca I have a pond that is difficult to treat for algae, scum etc. due to constant run off from a neighboring crop field. I cannot afford an aerator right now. Is the use of something like a bottom feeding fish a possibility or do I just have to live with a not so aesthetically pleasing and unhealthy pond?

Wow! I wish I knew about this site 3 yrs. ago when we moved to this property. Are tilapia hardy enough to use in Southern Ontario temps? I'm also not sure what fertilizers are being used on the field that our run off is generated from. Fish are definitely my first choice but I don't want to set myself up for failure. (and have my kids ask why all the fishies are doing the backstroke!!) Thanks so much for your time. Kelly

Sent by Canadianpond.ca? You must have talked to David! Here's the deal; Tilapia won't survive in Ontario, maybe shortly in the summer but winter water temps are near 39 under the ice.
As far as fish solution goes in Canada, there are no species that will clean your pond this far north.
As far also as a cheap solution, look into diverting the water from the field away from your pond, established shoreline vegetation to filter nutrients, have some areas for aquatic vegetation inside the pond and see results overtime.
Any pond ages and eventually dies... its called eutrophication. Along the way, you may not have a choice but to treat your pond if you want a pond.
Unless you want a wetland, bog or swamp, then just let it age naturally. A wetland is a beautiful habitat for wildlife!
Good luck!
