Hello. I'm new to this fourm but have had a pond for around 3 years. The problem is my pond is being taking over by some type of weed. Can anyone tell me what it is and how to control it.
Welcome to PBF! I am not a pro so won't hazard a guess but, if somebody tells you to crush some in your hands and then smell it....ya might want to use little piece....
Again,
Welcome!

Bubba, don't know how old ya are or where yer from (S of the M/D line)but sorry yer first responses were from such sooo uninformed ooooold guys, they like ta gab! Now ya have a response from someone less intelligent. I recently encountered such an invasive weed (ain't a weed but is an algae) As I have from square one I asked Bill Cody and he advised me it was Chara. It can be controlled with an algaecide. If ya want a connect to a company that has a good solution to the problem, pm me. Also, ya shouldn't have lurked sooo long, ya may have got a DA welcome to the site much sooner. Thanks BD and PW. You guys think ya rock! Actually I'd need a whole nother post ta mention the guys on here that actually have a knowledge of Aquatic life. That list would be VERY long. If I'm wrong, I apologize. Now that was an impressive welcome!!!

Dude, forgot (not that it happens several moments apart) but my first car was a 57 2 dr Chevy sedan which I inherited from my bro who went into the Navy when I was 17, 1966. I had three 57's since but was too too stupid ta keep em. Had a what was called a delivery wagon (2 door station wagon but not a Nomad). Life was good when we were young and bulletproof but is better now we realize we were sooo uneducated back then.

This is becoming the forum "pull my finger" joke. C57, that might be chara, like the boys said, and it stinks like a skunk when you crush it. Bill Cody will tell you for certain. He's like a wine sommelier for algae.
Yeah that sure looks like chara to me. I have it also and it starts really kicking in about this time. It is natural to the US and some will say it has it's positives. It will carpet your bottom for sure. The bad thing is when it dies off you got all that turning into muck on your pond bottom.
2 things to be careful of.
1. Don't try to rake it out it just makes it worse as the spores fall off and then they repopulate. Yeah it sucks!
2. If you decided to kill it off with something don't do all of it at once or you could have a bad D.O. crash and kill some of your fish. I would do like 30 percent of your pond at a time. Wait a week do another 30 percent. If you have air I would run it longer while your are doing this.
