My grand father planted 20 or more cypress trees 7 years ago and now they are a nuisance to say the least. What are some ways to get take them out of the pond and try to take back control of the shallows?

I've been around cypress before but not well studied on them. So it is shoots or suckers, coming up in the shallows? Or are they seeds? If the infected area is dried will all the trees die? OK well obviously if you took ALL water away they would die but how about just lowering the dam level. Are you hoping for a poison?

I was thinking about girdling them and applying herbicide to the rings that I cut.

Actually, cypress trees do quite well with "normal" soil moisture, so inundation isn't a requirement.

I have a 15 yr-old cypress in my back yard. I certainly didn't plant it, but it's sorta cool in some respects since I live in Cypress, TX.
Hack-n-squirt applications of appropriately labeled aminopyralid, triclopyr or imazapyr-based herbicides is probably the best bet for controlling these trees in aquatic or wetland sites.
