I have read that they are pretty low in reproductive capacity and they only get to be about 4" long.

I was thinking that they could be good with smallmouth bass in a southern pond. They wouldn't reach a size where they couldn't be eaten and they wouldn't overpopulate.

I understand that they probably couldn't be purchased and would have to be caught in the wild.

Does anyone have any input???

Thanks

Ronald

I have collected them in locations in Florida and North Carolina. They are nearly impossible to tell apart from LES other than the two species prefer completely different habitats. Dollars like swampy areas and heavily vegetated ponds while LES like rocky streams and occasionally lakes.

You are correct they top out around 4". You may be able to source some from Zimmerman Fish. Otherwise, you would have to collect from the wild. I really enjoyed keeping them as aquarium fish. They are one of the least aggressive Lepomis species I have ever had.

CJBS,

Thanks for dropping some knowledge.

Assuming that I could locate some, either by purchase or by collecting them, and that I could have them successfully propogate in a forage pond, how do you think that they would fair as smallmouth forage if I was able to provide the right type of environment for them?

Thanks

Ronald

I think there are better options but they would be far better than BG.

I'm sure that there are better options as well. I'm just exploring all options at this point. I'm reading a lot and learning a lot. A lot of university websites have tons of information on fish. It has been interesting to see all the kinds of shiners, minnows, killifishes, suckers, etc. It has been a real lesson.

This is the second time that people have gotten confused about which pond we're talking about. I'm not mad or anything, I am just trying to avoid the confusion. In my posts I always try to say which pond it is that I am talking about. If you go back and read the first post you will see that it says southern pond.

Words on a screen can sometimes come off wrong. I'm not upset at the confusion, because I skim through posts myself and miss stuff too. So I'm not trying to sound like a jerk.

Do you guys have a system for keeping posts straight for guys that have multiple ponds???

Maybe we should put the state abbreviation in the subject of a thread so that everyone could immediately know where the pond is located?

I think that I will start doing that if I remember to do it. It could be rough on Friday nights after a few beers LOL.

LOL

I just failed reading comprehension. Sorry.

You might be the only one on here with ponds that far apart from each other!

Bocomo,

I don't have any ponds yet. We just have property. Just doing research on ponds so that when the hole gets filled with water we don't royally eff things up LOL.
