I am about to sell our BCS walk-behind tractor with brush mower. It is tough and reliable but is just not designed to manuever well. There are now a number of different brands of hydrostatic walk-behind brush mowers but it is difficult to get comparitive reviews. Any experience with these units? We will use it long and heavy, so ease of use, toughness, and reliability are all important. Thanks in advance for any insight.

RAH, if this is similar to what you're referring to or looking into, I can certainly vouch for their toughness and reliability! This isn't mine but I have the exact model. Electric start, 5-foward speeds with reverse and a locking differential when needed and very easy to maneuver. I've easily mowed over 4-5' tall weeds and thick brush with stalks about 1" in diameter, or more. This thing is a BEAST! Plus works great around the pond without shooting debris into the water  I was lucky to find a used one cheap (bad belt, $10 fix) because they're pricey! But like anything, you get what you pay for. I find these machines all seem to suffer in the maneuverability dept. Specifically, most require the operator to manhandle the unit to turn.....if you could find one equipped with steering clutches, it would probably solve most of that.
I use a DR brushcutter myself, and while it does the job, it's most definitely a workout. It has been quite reliable however.
BCS builds good stuff....no steering clutches on the hydros?

The one I am looking at online is made by Little Wonder. I will not buy another one unless it is hydrostatic and zero-turn (separate wheel motors). I am not sure if any of them are made that way.

If you want maneuverability, check into a unit with dual hydros. Never heard of em' but this unit intrigues me: http://www.gxioutdoorpower.com/36bs.php

I read a review about parts tearing off of this unit. I cannot tell if the Bill Goat or Little Wonder are dual hydro, but I am guessing not. I wish that I could buy a brush deck for my old Scag.

Anyone have experience with a Powerdog brush mower? One of their models has a revolving deck like the Bachtold mowers used to have.

Well - The BCS is just too hard to maneuver. Now I need to sell it and see if I can find something better suited to brush mowing.

I've had experience with a DR Mower. To be honest, nothing else in its class to compare it with, but I found it tough and reliable.

No experience, but I like the dual hydros and break-away blades. Dual trans should make it more user-friendly, maneuverability wise.

I may see if the manufacturer has sent any to local people. Its a lot to pay without some indication on performance.
