Heck I got better luck catching them with a long fishing net! I can't get my minnows to go in a minnow trap for nothing! I left it in the water last year for weeks and nothing. Fish all around. I even took and tied some fishing line in the middle of it with a hook and put a worm on it and I still did not get anything to go in. Craziest thing I ever seen.

Neither one, unless as Canyon says the black is just paint and not rubberized coating. Paint can be repainted camouflage or green with brown. Many minnows/shiners don't seem to like the rubber coated traps for some reason - catch rate is lower. Bare metal painted galvanized traps catch about twice as many minnows in my creek sets than the rubber coated ones. I got rid of my rubber coated traps and replaced them with Gee style minnow traps. I always paint my new shiny traps a drab color. Try to paint the trap to look like a rock or log under water. Minnows shy away from shiny things underwater. Why they don't like the vinyl coated traps I don't know unless the coating makes the wire appear thicker. Vinyl probably has not affect when catching crayfish. Not saying the vinyl doesn't catch fish just fewer fish compared to plain wire mesh. You can run the test yourself for verification.

Before you attempt to burn off the plastic of the vinyl traps watch this video and consider buying the Gee's G-40 galvanized trap. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V685AfLntb0The Gee's has been around for over 100 years and is still manufactured in the states. The advantage over the black vinyl traps is the mesh is square and has a higher visibility factor. Let me know what you think.

I bought two of the Gee's 40 several weeks ago. Only limited use so far but I like them.

ps: no biggie..but why would anyone need to make part of an online
video about a minnow trap while driving a car in the rain?

I don't know if this will help but it is working great for me. I bought a long pole swimming pool cleaning net at a garage sale. When my feeder does off or even when I just hand throw some feed along the shore my fhm are all over the pond edge. I put 20-30 1/8 inch floating pellets in that dip net and place it near the bank. The minnows swarm the feed and I just pick up the net and have 2-3 dozen minnows in one scoop. Sounds crazy but it works every time.

Not crazy man. I've done the same thing with my skim net when I am curious what a particular school of minnows are. Works well.

I'm going to get me couple of those Gee's and try them. Had never seen that style before in any of the stores I go to.
One thing I will say about side by side tests. I've recently had two of the plastic coated traps side by side within 10-20 feet of each other in two different small ponds (4 traps total). I can have 30-50 minnows in one trap and the next trap might have 2-20. Next time I check it might be reversed. No explanation, just my experience. The minnows ain't talkin.

Same experience here...same trap, same size, same coating, same food, 5 feet apart. One time the left one will be twice as full as the right, then next time vice versa. No idea as to the cause.

We have the best luck with the trap in under a foot of water. A good old bagel lasts the longest in the trap for bait. Place the trap so the bait floats to the top of the trap but have the trap just under the water by 1/2".
I find if I place the trap deeper I pick up the emerald shiners and not the fat heads. The crayfish find the trap every day too any where from 3-5 every day even with just a bagel for bait.

I too have the best luck in shallow water. Then again every once in a while, when I'm not catching many, I will throw it out deeper. Most time, no go. But every once in a while, lots of FHM.
Go figure.
