Had some real-world experience with rotten ice last night....we've been in a pretty long stretch of below freezing temps here, coupled with some fairly significant snowfall. We then had a window of warmer weather a week ago or so that melted the snow down some - followed by another arctic plunge in temps.
What that did to the ice on the ponds was basically create a 6 inch layer of 'white ice' that APPEARED solid but absolutely was not.
I took my ice axe to test the stability, as the kids wanted to go play on the little pond. I sunk the blade in probably 4 inches on the first half a swing - one handed. I figure what I really had was 2 inches of 'solid' ice, masked by a layer of 6 inches of crap.
I hadn't had a lot of experience with white ice but I'll tell you what, it was VERY misleading. Needless to say the kids didn't get to play on the pond yesterday.

Ya ice can be very odd that way. Up here we call it honey comb ice. The white is the air trapped in it. Just the sun on it can make it completely un safe as the air heats up. Creepy stuff.
