The pond was built in November and has been filling up using a water well and rain run off. The pond has always had 12 to 18" of water clarity. I turned off the water well this past week because of the snow fall and the rain we had/having. And the pond was almost at full pool. With all the rain 3" and with the snow I thought the pond might muddy up a little. Yesterday a checked water clarity and I went from 15" to 3.5 feet of clarity in just a week. I have been adding agg lime where rain runoff enters the pond and checked the pH 7.2. How is it the pond went from 15" to 3.5 feet visibility in 5 days. Water temp has dropped to 42 and I am looking for some of the TFS to show up on the surface but the water clarity has blown my mind. Did all the alge die? Why did the pond get so clear, even with all the rain run off?

Your pond may have had a die back or a natural trimming of the bloom especially if the reduced water clarity had a slight greenish cast instead of a more muddy dirt colored hue. The recent snow and cold front may have cooled the water enough that the early algae growth was suppressed by the colder water and snow.

Thanks Bill, And yes they water did have a green tent and the pond always had green color, in fact it was a Jade green color, and in the past 30 days it turned to an olive green color (14" visibility) when water temps went to 59. And when the water temp dropped to 42 from the snow and ice, within 3 to 5 days, the water cleared to 3.5 feet. I am guessing you hit the nail on the head. I did not think of that but you did. So will I need to fertilize the pond when the water temp comes back up? Will the clear water hurt my stocking plan of 10,000 TFS as soon as the water temps rise? I am hoping this cold spell we are scheduled for tonight will be our last hard cold spell.
Thanks
Tracy
