So I have been minnow trapping with the kids and it has been quite slow with empty traps, green sunfish, and bluegill. This morning we got a Mottled Sculpin out of the Mad River and they are dying to get it in the pond. I understand they are not a great pond species but is there anything detrimental about putting it in the pond? Thanks.

They might eat describe fish fry but I font think it will reproduce in a pond. You will Probly never see it again. But might be fun for the kids to get to release it and dream about it.

I wouldn't be afraid to stock it. They don't get very big, maybe 4 or 5 inches. Not sure it will survive in a pond though.

Thanks fishm and bill. Do not figure he will make it past summer and as the pond is void of any fish, not concerned about the fish fry. Goal is to keep the kids engaged, not going to tell them it will likely die.

They are ambush predators, eating a variety of food including aquatic insects. I don't think putting it in the pond will cause it to die, it just won't reproduce.

Yeah finding one fish in the pond or one particular fish in a pond is tougher than finding an needle in a haystack!

If it is a mottled sculpin, they have water quality requirements near brown trout...
