And if you're in Florida or one of the other southern states don't be a smart a$$ reponding. grin

I've got what appears to be 2 inches of solid clear ice on my ponds. No doubt it will be thicker next week when temps drop to near zero Farenheit.

You?

One inch max yesterday. 51 degrees and rain tomorrow.

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?

Wanted to drill and measure yesterday but ended up spending the day at my inlaws... As mentioned in Hard Water thread I am on the fence of this next storm coming though but looks like we are going to get ice/rain.. Will see if I can get a measurement on my lunch today...

Just drilled and have a legit 3" out at the end of dock.. 3.5-4" around edge.. Only caused one pressure crack with a beautiful song.. shocked. Wish this warmup and rain wasn't supposed to come through before the cold snap...

3-5" on ponds around Lincoln I fished yesterday. Cold temps coming, season is finally here!

Cool! Love that kind of stuff!

I'm just glazed over here in Central IL. Actually with the sunshine and warm temps today I bet I have open water again this evening when I get home.

I'm hoping for a real hard freeze soon though...lots of work to do that requires walking on water.

Guys,

I feel like the Lone Ranger. Everybody looking forward to thick ice and I am nervous what will happen when I get it. This is my first year with fish in the pond so I know I am acting like a new parent with their first kid; totally paranoid. Max depth is 8 feet and most 4 to 5. I have been using the aerator (in 4 feet of water) as needed to keep an area of open water so far. Looking at 4 or 5 days coming up next week with wind and subzero temps so I don't want to run the aerator for fear of super chilling. I am going to develop substantial ice thickness. Am I worrying needlessly? Should I be following some other approach?

I need to make it thru this winter so I can increase the depth next summer.

All thoughts are appreciated!

Bill D.

Bill,

You should be fine but if it was me I'd pull the diffuser back to 3 feet if I could. You should have it at a depth of about a third of your maximum depth.

Thank you Sir! I was losing hope that someone would answer. I can't move the diffuser now. So would you continue with my approach of opening the water with the aerator when outside temps are ok? I am in the process of raising the level with the well, so depth numbers will be up by a foot all around by the time the frigid air hits.

2-3 inches average with strange holes caused by the incessant winds. Dangerous ice right now.

Bill,

I think you're fine. Just keep a hole open 24/7 and you will have no worries.

I was on 12 inches on some small water a month ago. The big deep lakes here are just starting to cap

It's actually cold enough that water is sitting on top of the ice but it's not melting. By tomorrow it will be all solid again when the temps take a nose dive.

Cranked up the diffusers today as I could end up with 6 inches of snow on Tuesday.

Cecil,

Are you going to run your diffusers thru the subzero weather this week? They are forecasting high of -4 and low of -14 now for my area on wednesday and the rest of the days this week at least dipping subzero. Also supposed to snow.

Bill

Bill D., you can run them intermittently. Clear ice (with no snow) will allow the sunlight thru. With a new pond, and it's low biomass, you have less chance of winterkill than a eutrophic pond.

If you get snow, run it until the hole opens and the sun can get into the water.

I will run mine continuously from now on until the ice goes out. Scott is right, that, it doesn't have to be 24/7, but my fish have such a monetary value I don't have an issue with the utility cost. I've also had ice block an airline even with a check valve, if I shut mine off. I'm guessing the warmed air from the compressor causes condensation in the air line and it freezes it shut.

Thanks guys,

I will just keep doing what I have been doing then; running intermittent. Got it running now, 4 to 5 inches of snow last night and still snowing hard. Forecast is for another 6 monday night. Good news is it is only supposed to get down to -7 tonight!

And *poof!*in one day my 3" of ice gone since temps and dewpoint jumped up to the mid 50-s before taking a nose dive.
