As some may know I'm just getting into pond management and I'm reading all I can. I've been reading alot about aeration. I have a system already but am wondering about emergencies as I have read about these situations. I have heard alot about horizontal aeration but can't find any info on products, like Super Horizontal Oxygenator II. I don't have a tractor so that type is out. If anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate it.

The SHO2 was the brainchild of Dr. Bruce. I just designed it with PVC and the suggested sweeper noozles. Here is the link: http://www.pondboss.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=003206 This will help me save fish if I have another DO crash(I believe it was an algae die-off). Better safe than sorry.

BarO thanks for info. Is that your water supply for the pond or is it recirculating out of the pond? I'm just getting started but I still want to prevent as many bad things from happening as I can.(if possible)What exactly is a sweeper nozzle? Thanks for help

I have run an 1-1/2" PVC line to the pond from my well pump house. I can spray water out of the 4 noozles at 45PSI and still have full pressure at the house for the HouseBoss. If she's happy, we're all happy! After going through a 2 year drought, I decided the pond would not suffer again. I have found that if you spend Big $'s to upgrade the pump that it WILL bring much needed rain.

Thanks for input guys. I have a 1" line out to the pond with discharge pressure of 60 psi (pumps max). If you don't mind I will try to duplicate your design. If so, any do's and don'ts for the install

How big is the pond, Beau? And what is the general shape and depth?

Bruce, I'd say its shaped like a peanut .25 acre depth varies from 5 to 13ft most about 8' range. Fairly steep sides.

Then don't design anything complex. Just attach a single sweeper nozzle to the end of the 1" line and wire it to a metal fishing pole holder so that it's oriented exactly parallel to the surface, but about half an inch under. This will create a significant disturbance at 60 psi. It will also create lots of circulation depending on where you put it in the pond, and how large the opening on the sweeper nozzle is. The standard sizes you find at Home Depot deliver either about 5 gpm or 12 gpm. Buy one of each and see which you like.
This makes a fabulous back up aeration system for a smaller pond such as yours. It will also deliver fresh water. You'll need to estimate an electrical and water budget so that you get the most circulation for the dollar spent. If it gets expensive you can find ways to just run it at night.

Kasco surface agitators also make nice backup aeration systems. I have a 3/4 hp unit that runs just at night so the fish always have lots of oxygen.
