(recirculating aquaculture system)
Yee haw. Always something new. About a month ago I moved in about a 1000 bluegill fingerlings to one of my tanks in the basement of my recirculating system from the hatchery pond. Well obviously I brought some snails and or eggs as I have them growing inside some of the plastic media (mb3) of the moving bed biolfilter. Not a good thing as they are parasite vectors.
I'm consulting with some experts in hopes that there may be a way to erradicate them short of doing anything that would harm the nitrifying bacteria or fish. Should have done a 3 percent salt dip but some of these fish were so small I was reluctant to do that.
Another good reason to have a quarantine tank!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Geez....unwanted guests showing up unexpectedly seems to be a common theme as of late!
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"
If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1) And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1) Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT? PB answer: It depends.

Pat W They're not in the fish tank that I can see. They are inside the spaces of the plastic media that circulates in a 55 gallon drum. It would be quite traumatic on a fish in there! LOL I'll post a picture if I can upload it on my computer. My computer has been giving me issues in that respect lately.

Cecil, why not salt your RAS? It shouldn't harm the fish or your bacteria. Using natural Sea salt would also add micro nutrients and trace minerals.

I keep it at 0.2 percent (200 mg/l or 2 ppt) on a continual basis right now. Is there some literature out there that says a certain level will kill the snails?

It's in my horoscope Bob! Mercury must be in retrograde! LOL I have a really nasty cold right now with throat burning post nasal drip too! Trouble is I have to mount a fish today and get a bunch of fish packed for shipping tomorrow. At least it feels like early October when the dog out. Upper 50's up here with the sun shinning.

Hey Cecil, I found a site that says Dimilin will kill the snails and not hurt the fish. Probably worth noting the same site also said: If you leave the dead snails in your pond, you will quickly have major water quality problems!!! I can’t stress enough the importance of removing the dead snails from your pond. Live snails are a major source of bad things that can infect your fish. Dead ones are even worse. You got a plan on how to get the dead ones out of the drum once you kill them?

Looks like .5% is lethal......and if Iirc, ~.8% matches fish blood salinity. VERY small study on snails another, better study This one says mortality begins at 250ppt for some species

I'd say I find one in every 20 or 30 pieces. Considering how much the media rubs against it self in there I'm surprised they even survived to make their way into the inside of the media. No plan but I was blowing them out when I found them.

Thanks Rex. I'll have to give those a read. Yeah could go as high as 0.8 percent gradually with no harm to the fish.

Cecil, could you isolate the MMB tank and do a PP treatment? Or would that wipe out the bacteria too? Would PP get the snails?
Or isolate the tank and do the .8% salt.....

Or isolate the tank and do the .8% salt..... All good questions. My guess is PP would kill the bacteria but I need to do some research reading up on the links Rex provides. I also have feelers out in the aquaculture community.

Another good reason to have a quarantine tank! Try Aquari sol. You can find it at pet shops that sell tropical fish. Had the same snail problem in a 75 gallon tank and it killed the snails. Did not harm the fish.

I think I'll pass on the second one. It's not NACL but a drug and also a piscicide! Might as well add rotenone while I'm at it. LOL First study seems to indicate it should reduce them up to 2/3's at 0.8 percent which is as high as I would want to go in regards to the fish. However there is no indication what it would do to the bacteria colony. A crash would be catastrophic!

Cecil, I had snails in one of my tilapia holding tanks and nuked them with salt. My ammonia never spiked with several hundred inches of fish in a 55G tank and a sand filter, after the slaughter. I know the salinity topped the .8% threshold you mention. I poured in almost 2 gallons of API aquarium salt (close to 2% salinity). According to Biocon Labs, nitrobacter and nitrosomas will GROW in salinity of 6ppt, so I don't think you need to fret a loss... Excerpt from www.bioconlabs.com/nitribactfacts.html....Salinity Freshwater nitrifying bacteria will grow in salinities ranging between 0 to 6 ppt (parts per thousand) (specific gravity between 1.0000-1.0038). Saltwater nitrifying bacteria will grow in salinities ranging from 6 up to 44 ppt. (specific gravity between 1.0038-1.0329). Adaptation to different salinities may involve a lag time of 1-3 days before exponential growth begins.
