I have found several fake Christmas trees on the side of the road in my neighborhood. Can anyone see a down side to sinking them in my lake?

Not really made for underwater use. One concern I would have is they might start to shed non-degradeable "needles" over time.

I have been thinking about this some more and I am going with...IMO I would not do it. My thinking is this. Most artifical trees I have seen are constructed of a painted wood center post, wire branches and plastic needles. Put one in the pond and fast forward in time to when that center post rots. What is left now lying in the bottom of the pond in a pile? Rusty wire, plastic and paint.

I tend to think not to add fake trees to pond also. As we all know everything is made in China.... They hate us... So there is no telling what poisonous chemicals are in the tree. Also as Bill said in a few years you will have a pile of rusty stuff on the bottom that you probably won't want. Heck I got acres of cedar that if any body wants to come get , y'all are welcome to do so

Edited for spelling

I am using them placed horizontaly and weighted by cinder blocks. I have them placed in only about 2-3 ft. water for forage fish only. If and when they deteriorate they are close enough to the bank to simply drag out and replace with some more. I'm trying it.Only real problem I can think of is they get stuck in the muck bottom and I have a hard time dragging them out.

It's your pond. I personally wouldn't, there are sooo many natural alternatives.

Pat< I am quite sure there was a perfectly good label written in broken english on the tree box saying there is nothing toxic inside and we know they wouldn't say so if it wasn't true. wink

As for me, I am keeping my structure natural. Boulders, brush piles and REAL christmas trees.

I have plenty of cedar that you can come git if you want. I would think your area has plenty of cedars also.

Also as you mentioned in another thread about a swimming place. You might want to re think having all that metal in where the g- kids could get into it and get poked full of holes from the rusted tree... Just thinkin

Agree with why add chemicals and metals to your pond unless you have to? Paint? Wire?

IF you're open, check your local area to find out if there are city or Scout tree drop areas and grab the real ones as they become available.
