Birds or neighbors did me the favor of adding bullheads to my pond when I first dug it 3 years ago. I don't enjoy watching them devour my fish food, chase my CNBG away from their food, or getting on my hook. I am trying my best to get their numbers down by catching all I can by whatever method I can. A telephone rig is my next project. I wanted to share my homemade trap in case others wanted to replicate. Fairly easy to make and I can easily catch 50-100 small bullheads a day at this point.
Supplies Needed: (2) 2 liter bottles
1 soldering iron
8-10 foot of string
2 small zip ties
1 small bottle with top
1. Cut the top out of one 2 liter and the bottom out of the other. Needs to be cut after the bottles gets past the curve about 1/2 inch or so.
2. Take soldering iron make holes all around the bottle that has no bottom. (One without the top is trash)
I make rows an inch apart and space the holes 1 inch. Hole size is your preference. This allows bottle to sink.
3. Make two holes side by side in the middle of your bottle for the string.
4. Take your string and tie it to the bottle in the middle holes you made.
5. Put the top of the bottle you have into the bottom of your trap. (Make sure cap is off of the top you are inserting)
6. Burn a hole through the both sections and secure them together with zip tie. Do the same thing on the opposite side.
7. Tie the other end of your string to the small bottle. The purpose of this bottle is so you can find your trap and as a safety in case it falls into the pond. It floats. I put my foot on this bottle when tossing my trap out into the pond.
8. Add a dozen or so pieces of fish food to the trap and toss it into your pond to fish. (Make sure the cap is on your trap. Remove the top to pour out your catch.)
