I have one that bangs on the brick chimney. I don't understand how it doesn't have brain damage.
3 ponds mountains of NC. One 5 acre and two 1/4 acre ponds. SMB Redbreast sunfish LMB YP CC brook trout WE and warmouth perch

The one I have by my house seems to tap tap tap in a much slower cadence than the other woodpeckers. IT is as if they need a bit more time to get the head back and forth.
The funniest thing by me though is that the one by my house seems to like to sit on top of the high voltage lines metal towers. There must be a rust hole or something on a flat survace on the very top as he is up there pounding away on the metal structure. It is the most amazing sound as it sounds like the whole woods is echoing with a metallic pounding noise as if someone is taking a jack hammer to metal dumpster. he/she is up there about once a week hammering a way and i can't help but smile as I'm not sure i understand how that behavior helps except to get a bad headache...
I tried to get a recording of the sound on my phone but it didn't turn out very clear.

Canyon, When they do that, it's probably for the reason of drumming. The more/louder the sound they make, the more they feel it attracts a mate.... we see that behavior among people too.

They also use the noise as a territorial marker. Louder = bigger bird? Sort of a "stay away, this is my area" to other males.

Unless you see the PWP banging on your roof or gutter, or whatever, sometimes, it's a smaller WP, and not the Pileated.

Pretty convinced now it was a PWP. Talked to my brother last night and asked him to look it up. He said they are around once in a while. I've never seen one tho. Bob-O, this was in Fremont where my property is. Grand Haven is where everyone from Florida moves to during the summer months. You could probably see a Sasquatch or two at any given time on the beach.

I love that beach, that's why I camp nearby. If I can lure one to camp, there may evolve a new species. Bob-Osquach. Stay tuned for details.
