Without DNA testing I'd have to wonder if it was a pure Lepomis cyanellus. Not saying it's not but...

Kudos to the angler. Not trying to steal anyone's thunder though.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I saw this over at BBG. I realize that a biologist certified it, and there is certainly a lot of GSF showing in the photo. But I can't help thinking that there are some BG genes in the lineage, somewhere.

Cecil beat me to it!

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Glad I'm not the only one.

Unfortunately being a biologist doesn't mean they are flawless in identification of sunfish hybrids. Hybrids can be really tricky as we all know.

I had two biologists disagree on whether a a fish was a pumpkinseed or a hybrid pumpkinseed.

From even my limited experience and knowledge with HBG, I agree 100% there appears to be BG genetics - my bet is not 100% GSF. Amazing how that could have escaped the attention of a professional fisheries biologist.

Either way, congrats to the young lady that caught it. Very nice fish.

Bob,

Indiana actually has about a dozen records that come out of ponds or private waters. The state's contention was my fsh had an unfair advantage because it was fed commercial feed.

I wish growing record fish was as easy as feeding them! I haven't grown a 16 inch perch since that only one in 2005!

I agree the new NC GSF record does not have the features of a true GSF. If the "fish biologist" had the 'new record' and a true GSF side by side he would have easily seen the difference between the two fish. I have to give him credit that he did recognize it was not a bluegill.

16" YP...the only guys I know [or have ever read about] who have achieved this miraculous feat in the world are Cecil and Bill. We are in the presence of greatness - gives me something to shoot for one day. If I hit 14.5" I'd be happy to call it a done deal!

Bill has produced a 16 inch perch?

Didn't happen unless I see a picture. grin

Update:

Bill sent me a picture via email. Bill has always been truthful to me and others so there was no doubt it was true. Just never saw the picture for some reason. I like to rib him a little too.

wink
