I have a 30+ year old pond that is shaped like a tornado cut out between rolling hills on my property. The wide part is my levee and it dwindles down to a point into my pasture grass. The pond is around an acre in size. It is 6' deep at the levee which is the deepest part.
I am wanting to increase the size on both ends, the levee side and where it goes into a point in my pasture. I want to put a dock at the center of the old pond, dig out around where the dock will go for swimming, and put up a sea wall.
I have a valley behind my levee that is 65 yards wide at the top and around 30' deep, and 75 yards from my existing levee to my property line. I am wanting to put my new levee at the edge of my property line to increase the pond on that end, and tear out my existing levee.
I am wondering is it feasible to build the new levee and break the old levee to let the water run into the new addition so that the old pond will drain. Then I can dig out the old pond deeper, install a dock and build a sea wall, with minimal fish loss. Just wanting to know if I am on the right path. Thank you for any help.

When I removated my old pond, I drained it down so the water was in the deepest part and built a temporary dam. Excavated the shallow end of the pond so it is now the deeper end and made it larger. Broke thru the temp. dam and deepened the new shallow end to get rid of the muck. Other than a few cubic yards of dirt washing into the newest part of the pond it worked pretty well. I had to walk in the old part of the pond and help some of the fish to the new area of the pond. Knee deep muck......... By the time it was over, I was pretty much covered in muck and splashed water, but all the fish were in their new home.

Coondog, I like the idea of building a bigger levee further down the draw. First make sure you have the watershed to support the much larger volume of water. Assuming you have the watershed, build the new levee completely and breach the old dam. You MAY want to leave a lot of your old levee to create a fishing pier at little additional cost, and you'll be glad you did!
