Pond Boss Forums AQUATIC VEGETATION Identifying plants Not sure this is Widgeon Grass any more

So this year, this stuff seemed to spread to more than 60% of my pond and I need to do something about it.

It's growing in all depths of the pond, from shallow to what I'm guesstimating is 7-9'.

I had originally identified it as Widgeon Grass, but from what I can find, widgeon grass wont grow in that deep of water. I need some assistance first at identifying it and then what are my options.

I think reward would work, and that would be spot treatment which I guess I'm okay with. I feel like I would struggle to get deep down in some areas.

I don't think that I want to put something in that would just kill the entire pond because I have arrowhead growing in the shallows and I don't want to kill that.

It also sticks above the water surface about 1/2" in most spots as well.

Leaves look too wide for widgeon, to me.

Maybe Kelly Duffy or someone else will give a positive ID and treatment.

If it helps any... the Geese apparently love the stuff. Just had a family of 6-7 come in and chow down on it for a little bit.

7 - that's what I've got too, and boy is it aggressive. Good news is it's cleared up the pond and helped virtually eliminate the FA. The clarity is amazing - I have never had 6-8' clarity except in winter and it's a blast watching the fish behave and feed. However, my small pondweed is growing thick and deep - I'm going to have to do something to manage it, at least partially.

TJ - I'm probably going to take care of part of it, but I feel like it's still beneficial to some extent. I think I'll let it do what it wants to do in the area where I wont fish. Maybe I'll clean it up around the dock area.

I'm considering the same approach...spot treatment and see how it responds. Should have treated earlier in season, this is the worst possible time now, when it's fully mature.

Is that because of the DO when it's decomposing? Or just because theres more of it?

You want to treat the plants before they can set seeds that will germinate next year. Cooler water also holds more DO than warmer water.
