I have my aeration system set on a 12 hr. timer from 8 am to 8 pm . I live in the Pac. N/W . I've been running during the day to dissipate the warming water but should I run at night to help with the algae de-composition . I have trout in the pond and I'm starting to get quite a bit of color to my water . I can see down into it maybe 2' or so . It appears to have tannic acid in it as it's got a yellowish color to it .

Orville, I would run it at night to improve nighttime oxygen levels. Plants respire and consume oxygen at night...all decomposition consumes O2 as well. If shallower water warms during the day, night aeration will ensure the deeper, cooler waters have plenty of O2 for your trout to lounge in.

I'm not sure how well either time periods will help with your specific algae species, if at all.

Hey Orville,

Most guys here will tell you if your going to choose a 12 hour shift it should be at night. Why?

Well that's when your pond has more D.O. loss then at any other time. Your plants are not producing any D.O. at night as a matter of fact they are putting off Carbon Dioxide which isn't good. During the day they will put off D.O. with the sun hitting them.

So if it were me I would run it at night if I had to choose a 12 hours shift.

The only difference between a rut and a Grave is the depth. So get up get out of that rut and get moving!! Time to work!!
