How fast do emerald shiners get to 3"s?

Last year I was 100% sure they did make a good spawn in our pond. I am wondering how they spawn in the creeks?

Last night we has a fly or bug hatch and the pond was just alive with minnows eating these flys or bugs. The bugs were like a very small gnat. Anyways the surface was just alive with minnows jumping and snatching up all these bugs. We were able to net them and they were all emerald shiners and everyone about 3"s in length. It was so loud with minnows jumping it sounded like running water.

Could 3" shiners be last years spawn?
How do these guys lay eggs and could the spawn have happened off the end of our waterfall?

I honestly doubt your emerald shiners spawned in your pond. You likely are seeing one year old common shiners. If you post a picture of these 3" shiners I can tell you for sure. Common shiners are fairly common in northern lakes where they will live until spawning season when they'll ascend feeder streams to spawn. Much like they used the waterfall in your pond to successfully spawn.

Maybe the emerald shiners are your original stocker shiners?
