I was talking to my barber yesterday who is a member of the county conservation club with three ponds, the largest about 5 acres has aeration. A month or so ago I told him the aeration was a good thing since I expected a fish kill in my pond when the ice and snow melted. But he said they turned the aeration off during the winter because they have ice fishing and they didn't want the ice to thin. Anyway he told me they had a big fish kill and it look like a thousand fish were floating on the water with the biggest being 3 ½ to 4 foot grass carp. I don’t know if stone aeration would thin the ice but it looks like it might. Is there any advice I might pass on to him concerning aeration and thinning ice.

Yeah, this guy seems to be a genius... Has he ever used any aerator during winter? I have and I know how that ice isn't affected that much. Last winter I used 3 aerators on my ~1-1.5 acre pond and the ice was good enough for walking. Why? It's simple - ice is thinner ONLY NEAR the aerator and if you don't use high power aerators then everything should be fine. You won't access 100% of pond area but there will be a plenty of spots for fishing and no winter kill has to be expected.

Ditto!
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I didn't aerate continously this past winter, but used the shallow water diffusers to open a large area every so often. I had no problems fishing deeper water pvc structure, with the very thick ice being unaffected by the shallow water aeration.

In my under 1/2 acre pond (water was down due to drought) I aerator continuously when the temp was below 35 and in about 3' of water. Sometimes the open hole was 30' x 30' and sometimes it was only 4'. That said the ice on the edge of the 30 x 30 hole was over 12" think and 10 feet away from that was 20" think over the rest of the pond. I don't think even strong continuous aeration hurts the ice that much. Of course it depends on how cold the winter is and this was a cold one where my septic outflow froze up.

I don't think even strong continuous aeration hurts the ice that much. The stronger aeration you got, the bigger open water area appears. In thaw it can be rather large. That's all. Once I tested the thickness of ice with an auger. I drilled several holes near aerator and figured out that it's safe to move even very close to the open water. So, in this case it's irresponsibility or ignorance that caused fish kill. If pond owner had tested the ice then he should know that.

That spot is roughly 15 miles from my house. Met Nate there a couple of times. not to mention Scott once.
