All of us in Eastern Canada and Northeastern US know its been a really long, cold winter -- and now that our ponds are thawed, I have collected over 100 dead frogs from the shores of my 1/2 acre pond. Looks like I had too many to begin with, and likely these are the ones who went into shallower mud to hibernate. There are survivors however, should I be concerned about anything here in terms of wildlife and water quality, or have others seen similar situations with their cold-climate ponds? FYI, its a new pond - 1 year old exactly.
Thanks!

My opinion - such thing happens. Last spring the shores of my pond were covered with "dead frog carpet"... Some of them always die {depends on winter} and there are always survivors.
Sure, rotting corpses affect water quality but this influence is unimportant and I'd suggest not to worry about that.

Fodder for the tadpoles, especially the Bullfrogs. I do remove them myself to get the nutrient load out of the pond before I get a FA problem. This year we only had a few deaths, but interestingly I don't get a heck of a lot of frogs, just a few. I think a large swampy natural pond behind us is the frog magnet and they all go there.

Thanks for the feedback! Yep, I removed all the corpses I could see (I am sure there are more hiding in the murky depths) as as the pond has a fresh inflow of spring water, I am not going to worry about it going out of balance. Thanks again!
