Just thought I would mention to all those new pond owners who are worried about leaks.

Our pond was built with out a sheeps foot packer. Just a big dozzer leveling the clay out around the pond. After the first year we build a dock and large anchor posts. These posted were set into concrete.

This spring being our third year for the pond it still leaks a bit but not near as much. The banks have naturally settled over 4"s this year with the heavy frost we had. This is most shocking to me. I would have never thought it could settle this much more. This 4" settling is noticeable by the posts not moving and the clay stains left on the posts from last year.

So my thoughts are don't worry about your banks holding water if you build them up high and don't pack them. If you have lots of water and time she will pack in and seal well providing you have good clay.

Very impressed how much the banks have packed in after three years.

I wish that were the case for me too. No luck with settling from the deep freeze here, still plenty wet on the back of my dam. Plenty of clay too based on how well it swallowed a tractor and how the soil stuck to my shovel when trying to get it out. Long weekend.
