Anybody see any yellow perch eggs in their ponds yet?
None here yet in Northeastern Indiana.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

last year i had a few strands gumming up the works in my basement ap system when it started warming up, some big fish this year, but i haven't seen any that look like they have eggs

I removed 12 egg strands yesterday Apr 09 that had been collecting since Sat Apr 5. No blue dye, water clear, visibility about 7ft, water temp today 2 ft deep 55F.

None yet still 36*F water temp and ice burg floating around the pond. It is about all gone today but a 8 foot by 8 foot. Water is only 18"s of clarity. Way to much dirt blown in from all the wind and snow this winter.

Just found my first one. Water temp is between 49.9 and 49.4 from top to bottom. Very breezy and the last time I checked air temp was 65 F.
Some aquashade but only had 1/4th gallon added and will add more later. Diffusers not cranked up yet. I see no point if the wind is doing a good job of mixing as is evident by the homogenus temps from top to bottom.

I am seeing very tiny fish in the pond (less that 1/2" long). Could these be from last fall, or are they definitely from a fresh hatch? The pond has FHM, GSH, and YP. The water is still too muddy to see anything below a few inches deep.

I just add colour for the colour and slow the growth of FA. I like to let it go for a bit in the spring till it starts to turn green...the water that is. Then add it to slow the growth of the plankton. This spring the dirt blown in from the wind mixed with the snow and ice was crazy. After the ice/snow melt the water went really brown from the dirt. Only 18"s of vis but dark brown not clay brown more top soil brown. I really want to add aquashade for looks but feel its better to let nature warm and start to go green first. I expect to have our biggest Yellow perch spawn ever this year with most all of the 400 perch over 8"s. Any thoughts on my process? You all know I am engineer nuts. Cheers Don.

No idea on what to do in your case. I use the Aquashade to reduce the bottom growth of Chara somewhat. I hoped it would keep the Sago Pond in check, but either I don't use enough or the Sago Pondweed doesn't need much light. I don't mind some macropyhites but don't want it out of control. Since there is no reproduction in the pond, and all the fish are pellet fed, I don't see the dye as an issue in retarding phtoplankton.

RAH - I think your water is way too cold and too early for a spawn and hatch with growth to 1/2" long already this year. Catch a couple and post a picture. I am pretty sure those are late last year's hatch.

They may be smaller than 1/2". It does seem pretty cold.

Surprised yes, but it is possible. IF he is in southern IN they had eggs 12-16 days ago. In warmer water temps 55F-65F, eggs would hatch in 5-6, maybe 7 days which would make the fry 5-8 days old. Growing at 1mm per day could produce 11-12mm YP. Normally YP fry do not hang out near shore and mostly remain off shore in open water feeding on zooplankton until they are larger 1"-2", then they move more near shore in fairly large schools.

In the past there has been discussion if yellow perch spawn is influenced by the moon phase. I don't think it is a main contributor. IMO main influences are water temperature and day length. In NW OH I have had YP eggs now for a week. More southern areas of the state and places like KY, TN, MO had YP eggs 3 to 4 weeks ago. Currently Apr 11 there is now a full moon. Those with YP pay attention to see if you are now getting noticeably more eggs ribbons.
