I have sent a water sample to TAMU. I used a pool water kit and was measuring a pH of 8.0 - 8.2. I am going to be at my place for Easter weekend and am going to have some time to work on my pond. I'm sure I wont have my sample analysis back by that time. Several people in my area have said I'll certainly need to add some Lime as 'All' ponds in this area of NE Texas (paris) need lime. I was also hoping to go ahead and fertilize.

Does anyone have any comments on liming or fertilizing with the only data I have at this point is a pH as above.

thanks

David, what direction are you from Paris?
If you are in the Piney Woods - normally acidic water.

We are about 20 miles south of Paris with good alkalinity and hardness, but in the transition zone between the Black land Prarie and Post Oak Savannah,

By the way, Highflyer (Brian)is hosting a N.E. Texas PB get-together two weeks from today and you will be welcome for a chance to meet some good folks and pick some brains...

David, what is the alkalinity level?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I finally got my water report back from TAMU - not sure what's critical but would appreciate comments on the following

pH 6.84

Alkalinity 121
Hardness 99 ppm /CaC03; 6 grains CaCO3 per gallon
Mg 6
Calcium 30
Na 11

What are other critical values

thanks

Ideally, an aquaculture pond
should have a pH between 6.5 and
9 as well as moderate to high total
alkalinity (75 to 200, but not less
than 20 mg/L) and a calcium hardness
of 100 to 250 mg/L CaCO3.
Many of the principles of chemistry
are abstract (e.g., carbonate-bicarbonate
buffering) and difficult
to grasp. However, a fundamental
understanding of the concepts and
chemistry underlying the interactions
of pH, CO2, alkalinity and
hardness is necessary for effective
and profitable pond management. There is no way to avoid it; water
quality is water chemistry.

See this from LSU

See this that has ranges in the Water analyses
