Started harvesting yellow perch and bluegill today.

Observation #1:

Never set a size limit on sales as most of the fish will come in just under that size! I limited my size limit to 14 inches and only harvested 4 yellow perch 14 inches or larger while releasing 30 or 40 between 13 1/2 and 13 3/4!

I had up to three other anglers fishing with one a fellow taxidermist that took three sub 14 inch yellow perch and the large bluegill below home with him.

Anyway here are some pictures.

Big bluegill that was 10.0 inches right on the nose but weighed 1 lb. 6 1/2 oz.

Same fish after overdosed on MS222:

Same fish in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket:

One of four 14 inch to 14 1/2 inch yellow perch with two weighing in at over 2 lbs.

2 lbs. 1 1/2 ounces (14 1/2 inches) and 2 lbs. 1/2 oz (14 1/8 inches).

14 inch fish showing egg mass from above (sides bulging).

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Love the way that BG has outgrown his fins. Awesome!

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

It's due to diabolical Dr.Condello's selective breeding! Could also be a fish that got to spend some winter months inside whether in my basement or one of the high schools. It should be interesting to see what the shooter <1 year old perch in my basement that are now 11 inches will do in the pond in a few years.

Interesting...that bull male has no distinctive black scale tipping I can discern.

TJ,

He did when he was fresh. In fact he had some bar markings too.

Tell me about it although I think I got it right this time as I went over them twice, once out of the pond and again before going back in. Anything that was remotely suspect didn't go back in.

Take another look at the first photo of the bluegill. If you look carefully you can see the black scale tipping above and behind the eye.

Today I had two high school kids over and one of their dad's a meteorologist and we caught 10 more perch 14 inches or over, and one keeper bluegill at 10 1/4 and 1 lb. 4 oz. Released a ton of under 14 inch fish.

Thanks. Just wish I could produce the numbers of quality bluegills as I do yellow perch. I can grow some awesome bluegills but the numbers just aren't there. I am working on it though by bringing a few hundred inside every winter.

Yellow Perch are not a difficult fish to produce to large size if you keep them to females only. They are tough as nails and never have any parasite issues in my pond. 99.9 percent of them are absolutely flawless.

Not sure if that qualifies as isolated black scale tipping in my opinion as the entire fish has black scale edges. However that's just my opinion.

Oops forget that. You didn't post the second picture until after I made my response. Yeah that sure looks like black scale tipping to me and it obviously is a female. Theo Gallus also posted a female fish with black scale tipping here.

Is that a Coppernose?

Cecil:

What's the age of the male BG vs. the female YP, and do you still have a bunch of FHM in the pond?

Not sure Scott. I'd have to guess the bluegill run from 4 to 6 years old? Probably the perch are little younger.

No fatheads. I will be trying to establish them again soon now that I no longer have bass in the pond. Found a nearby source at 7 dollars a pound.

This is where that dye marking would come in handy to mark year classes.
