Well I started to put the gypsum in the pond last night and it was a nightmare. We mixed with water in a 55gal. drum and started throwing it, very difficult and labor intensive. I notice a bunch of sandy material at the bottom of the barrel also???? Whats the easiset and most effective way of distributing this stuff? Does it have to be mixed with water first or can u just dump the bag in the pond?

thanks!!!!!!

Rent one of those gasoline powered waste pumps. $50 per day up here. We used one with a 2 inch line to put 4000 lbs of lime on my pond this year. Just pour the gypsum in the water in a small pile near the shore line and then slowly shovel the gypsum toward the intake hose. It's a 2 man job. Took us about 1 1/2 hours to distribute 4000 of lime. Reduce the output end with a 1 inch or 3/4 line and you will spray the gypsum laced water a long way.

Jixxxer,

Have a look at the topic entitled, "GYPSUM APPLICATION". Its located under this same topic, "Muddy Water". There are a few suggestions which may help answer your question. It

Here is the method I used. I unscrewed the one end filled the pipe with it. Hooked one end to the well pump and then a 50' hose on the other with a spray nozzle. Just roll it on the ground every now and then to stir it up. Works great for smaller ponds as you can spray quite far. Also a couple of pictures in action.

Interesting way of applying. I think with the 4 tons I had to apply we would still be at it though.

Jixxer...keep it simple. Let the pond mix it for you. Spread with a feed scoop, shovel, or pile it on a piece of plywood on your boat bow, and spray it off with a gas powered pump. There's no need to mix with water, then apply. More surface area contact with pond water, the better. Don't worry about getting it all out at one time. Put out some, put some out later, then do it again. Watch the water, measure visibility...then do it again.

We have a low tech way of distributing gypsum in our 6 acre lake. We put a piece of plywood across the bow of our jon boat and pour gypsum onto the plywood from the 40 lb bags that we get at Home Depot. Then we blow it into the lake with a leaf blower. Using a three man crew (one on the trolling motor, one of slit the gypsum bags and pour it on the plywood, and one to man the blower) we are able to distribute gypsum at the rate of 2000 lb/hour.
