Pond Docks, Piers, Jetties and Decks
Now that you have built a basin to hold water and create your dream of having a pond or lake, how about creating a dock to enhance the pleasure the pond can provide?. Docks serve many purposes. Dock and piers at the pond or lake make the water body much more user friendly and enjoyable for many activities and everyone visiting the pond or lake. When people visit a pond with a dock, the first thing many do is walk out on the dock to get a better ‘feel’ and view of the pond. Anglers, especially younger ones, almost always start fishing first from the dock.
Here are some good ideas from Pond Boss members of creative ways some of them built their own docks.
Docks can be a designed and built before or after the pond is filled or installed as a floating dock after the pond is full. Some docks are built as a cantilever structure that has a massive cement base and the dock extends out over the water and has no posts in the water. I beams anchored in the cement base are often used as the dock’s bottom frame.
Water fluctuation is a factor to consider when building a dock. Purpose, use and size are other factors to consider.
What Type? Floating or Stationary?

Member Answer- There are some plans for using 50 gallon plastic barrels for floats. As long as the floats are positioned correctly, you'll end up with a pretty stable dock. I'll dig up some links later(they are somewhere in my 10k+ list of favorites), and I'll replace this text with the links. EDIT: Here's a link I found:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070917142345AALAyNtAccording to my research, one 55 gallon drum displaces roughly 450 pounds of water (from previous link). Here is the one link I could find. I'll post more if I can dig them up. I've been thinking about building one of these myself.
Here is information from "esshup" about the weight factors to consider when building a dock using barrels, wood, and hardware.
" A gallon of water weighs, 8.3 pounds. So, take a 55 gal barrel. It will float 8.3 lbs x 55 gal minus the weight of the barrel. BUT, that's when the barrel is completely submerged. I only use half of that, 228# for what a barrel will support. Then you also have to take into account the weight of the wood and all the fastners on the pier. Pine weighs 36# per cubic foot. You have to do some math to figure out the weight of the wood on the pier, then take into consideration the number of people that will be standing on it."
