... and now the rain is pouring down.

It's been lightly raining all day, and the past couple days with sunshine has melted a little bit of the snow.

Yesterday was the first day in a long time that I could actually see the concrete and pavement in the parking lot.

There is going to be some flooding when this stuff melts!

We could sure use some of that rain!

But right now we're getting wind gusts near 50 mph!

Crazy!

Well ours is running off under the snow. The ground is frozen down to 18 inches or more. We're supposed to get the wind too.

The couple of thunderstorms that rolled through here this morning had pink lightening.

I put the rain gauge out about half way through the storms and it has a little over 1/4" of rain in it.

Pond was at 13 3/4" at Noon. Full pool is around 63".

I'm watching the squall line approach on the radar. We're under a tornado watch, a severe thunderstorm watch, a wind advisory, and a flood warning, simultaneously. 63 degrees right now, snow is gone except for a little on the north facing slopes.

Ponds still frozen, but starting to see open spots around the edges. Water draining off the ice like mad.

Wow, first smell of rain and sound of thunder for 2014...gotta admit I'm jealous! We had our warm streak hammered today with 1" snow - thankfully all melted by late afternoon from paved surfaces.

???

13 3/4 inches of ice? How close are you to full pool?

Yes, about 13" of ice. The metal measuring stick is showing the water level at 13 3/4". Full pool is at 63", so I'm roughly 49"-50" below full pool.

What went through here at 5 to 6 gave us probably an inch of rain.. Roads flooded everywhere.... Anymore would be bad with the frost in the ground..

The wind came right after and blew the fog away..

The worst is tracking right toward Tony... Actually probably there.. Looks like it is breaking up to north toward Scott and Cecil..

I give that the thumbs up.

I'm not sure I'd trust that one. eek

About 25 years ago I got stranded for several hours in a "thunder snow" near the end of November. It dropped about 10 inches of snow in less than an hour. The remaining winter went down hill from there. cry

Low pressure system now headed north set a 112 year record for low pressure, hence the high winds due to a pressure gradient.

If its at the beginning of the winter it means the it will be an open winter. Also said depending on how many fog mornings in the fall we have is the same number of snow storms we would have. We had 7 and so far we have had 6 storms. I expect one more good one the first of march and the melt.

Cheers Don.

No, it was in Northern Virginia during afternoon rush hour traffic. I was on Interestate I-66 westbound when it just plain shut down the highway and every road around us. It was quite a project to get it cleaned up so that the cars could begin to move again. There was no place for the snow removal equipment to begin operating, plus it took everyone by surprise.

Dang blizzard here this morning.

One of the guy's that was on the road this morning said they closed the highway due to visibility.

My Vertex hat went flying as soon as I walked outside this morning, and it took some running to catch it.

The wind's have died down and the snow has pretty much stopped.

Expect near 0° for a couple day's next week.

My hat went flying again when I got home!

It was quite calm during the afternoon and the Sun was working on the pavement.

A semi truck with a full load was trying to pull out of the building (loading docks).

He partially got out, but lost traction on the drivers side, which shifted the rig to about a couple inches from ripping the mullion's out between the two overhead doors. He could not move anymore. That was it!

He called his buddy with a Toyota Tundra, and I'm watching this event, while in my truck waiting to get out of the parking lot.

They synchronized quite a few attempts and finally got it working a bit more every try.

While observing the Tundra on this, only the Left Front and Right Rear lock up.

All four lock up on mine, which makes turning on anything dry, something to consider!

He slammed it a number of times, but got it moving and out!

It calmed down here this evening and then a couple hours later out of the blue the winds start howling again for a short while. No clouds, no storms. Kind of odd.

Should start a thread about some of the old signs of the weather.

Grandpa probably heard it before and handed it to me.

Cheers Don.

Go for it!

Were getting back into the deep freeze for a while.

Nice thing is the short warmup with the sun shining melted most of the junk off the pavement. It was a bumpy ride to say the least!

That's what I am grateful for, at this point wink
