Don't forget the state dog George. It the Texas Lacy. A cross between a coyote, scenthound and greyhound. It was brought to Texas by the Lacy brothers from Kentucky in the late 1800's to herd hogs. It's said that a lacy can do the work of 3 cowboys. They are very smart but hard headed, I know, I have one.

Cisco, if the Texas Lacy didn't originate in Texas, then I wonder why it's the state dog?

Also, armadillos are the only animal that can transmit Leprosy to humans.

Here you go esshup, a brief history.

ORIGIN AND HISTORY: Having nothing to do with the characteristics the dogs have, the name is that of the Lacy Family. Arriving from Kentucky by covered wagon in the 1800′s, the Lacy Brothers, Frank, George, Ewin, and Harry Lacy (pictured at the right), settled in the granite hills near Marble Falls, Texas. As true a pioneer as the men you see in history books, the Blue Lacy has filled the needs of Colonial Americans for well over a century on ranches in the Southwestern US. When the three-wheeled horse hit the trail it brought this unique breed unsuccessfully close to extinction. While the need for its instinctive herding abilities were diminishing, the need for its abilities to bay the fiercest of hog, pick up the trail of any game animal or find a wounded animal on the slightest of blood trails was on the rise in the commercial hunting industry. Blue Lacy owners claim they are the perfect universal dog, knowing where to be at just the right time.

DEVELOPMENT: The Lacys are noted to be the result of Greyhound/scenthound/coyote cross with the emphasis on the herding/droving characteristics. Many people have their own theory on the scenthound and coyote used. Whatever the scenthound or pariah dog might be in the combination, the cross defiantly worked. The Lacy brothers established this breed under the guidelines it takes to develop a recognized breed. The State of Texas honors the breed, as being the first known dog breed to orginate in it’s great State.

STRENGTHS: Herding and droving tasks.

WEAKNESS: Sensitive to yelling–responds better to stern commands

George Thanks for the interesting factoids. I am at the moment visiting the great state of Tejas. I'm currently in the Bulverde area, spent the last 2 days in Helotes, and Utopia. Went for a drive through Kerrville, along hwy 377, in the heart of Texas Hill Country. Going saltwater fishing this weekend at Port Aransas, and heading to Blanco on Monday to try for some stocker trout! Still trying to get my fill of Whataburger. I truly believe there is a Whataburger inside the gates of Heaven!

Tejas is one of my favorite places to visit especially in January. I spend almost as many hours driving from the Red River to my family in San Antonio, as I do getting from Savannah Mo. to the Texas border! But driving Hwy 281 is worth every minute!

My home state of Virginia has more public hunting land than Texas does and it is 1/6th its size. Unless you're rich, Texas is not a good place to go hunting.

Yeah, but you don't have a smidgen of the amount of hunting land us country raised Texas po-boys have.
The only ones I hear complaining are the immigrants from north of the Red River.
