That my son is a genuine piece of steel. LOL I have no clue, but at first sight I thought maybe it was a type of a mandrel. But it looks like a handle goes in it.

Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer.

Looks like the tip of someone's homemade spud bar to me?
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"
If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1) And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1) Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT? PB answer: It depends.

It was an ice spud bar. Friend posted it on Facebook asking what it was. Thanks.

Holes drilled into the ice can begin to ice back over, over time. A spud bar has some weight to it and can hack back through and open that hole back up to fish it again.

What Josh said. I will add that a spud is used primarily as a safety device around here. As you venture out onto the ice, you use it to strike the surface just ahead of you, testing for weak spots. After learning the weight of your bar, you will soon develop a "feel" for how many blows it takes to contact water, equating to how safe you gauge the ice to be.

Sprkplug provides very good advice for use of an ice spud. I use mine primarily during early ice to test the ice thickness. A good razor sharp ice spud can cut a hole through 5"-7" of ice pretty quickly. A spud is very good for creating larger sized holes compared to 4"-8" circles of the ice augers. For my most recent ice spud, the machine shop put hard surfacing on the tip. It stays razor sharp. For extra weight put a pipe or piece of rebar inside the pipe that is threaded on for the handle. A spud is the only thing that I used to make holes for ice fishing during the first 22 yrs of my ice fishing learning curve that started back in the early 1960's. Fastest and easiest way to manually cut ice holes in ice is an ice auger - regular or lazer style. Many that fish on thick 12"-24" ice use a power auger.
