I have about an acre and a half pond north of dayton ohio, it is going on 5 years old and I can not control this slimmy stringy, floating algie? I have crass carp , and I use cutrine ultra. I have purchased two fountains which I will put in soon. Any idea what type of algie this is? And how can I treat it?

Welcome. It's called filamentous algae. If you run a search on filamentous algae you will find twenty threads on the subject. Most all of us have it, so I'm sure we can get a discussion going for you. Here's the link to the search. http://www.pondboss.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=search

Brian:
Besides the GC, which don't usually eat much FA, what other kinds of fish do you have?
What are your intended purpose(s) for the pond? Swimming, aesthetics, fishing, ???
What is the level of FA you get on the pond, and how much FA are you willing to tolerate?

Hi I am trying to find out how best fight this algae. Two, when to start or how to start. I am willing to do about what ever.
Today I spent two hours in the water taking this algae out of my pond. I still have about two more hours to get it all out. I can not handle that much work for much longer. I thought my raking and pitch forking days were done. Any suggestions would be appreciated
Also: should I use lime in the spring, now, or not at all? Also, what about the use of cornmeal? What about tilapia in Ohio?
My pond looks good now but I moved so much algae that I can not do that agin in the near future or distant pleas help

Brian, I know what you mean about removing that stuff by hand...it is not a fun task. The worst part is that it will probably be back in about the same amounts in another couple of weeks..at least it works that way around here. If you search other threads you will find some folks have had success with Barley straw and also cornmeal and cottonseed meal. I have not personally used those. I have used Cutrine plus in both liquid and granular form and it works very well, but only for a short time...in two weeks it usually will be back. Tilapia work wonders on algae in my ponds. They completely control it...far more effectively than chemicals, but it does take them some time to get on top of the infestation. Once they get ahead of it, its no more algae, for me at least. Look for a recent post by Ryan from Ohio that has some dramatic before and after pictures of algae treatment with Tilapia. http://www.pondboss.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=000421;p=5 I can't advise you on how to get them or their legality in your area, but can say without hesitation, they ended my algae problems and have kept me algae free for 4 years now.

Brian, as shown in the post ML recommended the tilapia have been very effective in my pond a few miles NE of you. They are legal as far as I have found and no permit is required as of 2002 for stocking in outdoor ponds (I am assuming no legal responsibility) I located only 2 suppliers in within 100 miles and neither was sure if they would have fish of appropriate size available, no harm in checking again though.

Hi: I am also fighting FA. I have spent numerous hours removing with rake and pitch fork, and it sucked badly. I just put 75 pounds of corn meal on one of my coves( l shaped pond 1.5 acres) 1. can I still treat the banks with hydrated lime 2. Can I try to treat the other cove with hydrated lime? 3. I treated with cutrine + on april 20th will that matter. Any comments will help, I am at my wits end with this FA
