When I retired in June of 2010. I got several BPS gift certificates. I thought no better time to get a new rod and reel. After looking around and asking on this forum, I got down to either the Shimano Curado or a ABU Garcia Revo S. I bought the Revo.
This reel worked great for two years, then my casting distance began to dwindle, and I could hear a noise during the cast. Sent it to Pure Fishing to get it repaired. It was three drag washers to tune of $45 with shipping both ways.
Got the reel back and that problem was cured, but they messed up something as I had no control with spool tension knob. Contacted Pure Fishing and talked to Reggie. They sent me a UPS shipping label via email. It is enroute back to Pure Fishing. Reggie said it has his name on it, and he will get it right for me, and return it via UPS.
I'll let you know how this turns out. My major concern is will I be sending it back for new drag washers every couple years for almost $50?
Good morning Dave, I've checked the ships systems, and everything appears to be running normally.

Did you conduct any reel maintenance in the first two years.
And, more importantly, can you be certain Dwight, or one of his foul cats, didn't tamper with the reel?

Dear Mr. Conundrum,
I don't have an answer to your question about regular maintenance of modern reels. But ...
First, I feel your frustration. For much of my gear, I've gone to moderate quality/moderate cost that I just replace every few years.
However, sometimes it is good to be old. I still have a number of open-faced, closed-face, and fly reels from the 1960s, made by companies like Shakespeare, Johnson, Southbend, etc. They still work great if I clean and lube them now and then. Most have been on multiple rods that have slowly decayed, but the reels are still in great shape.
I'm taking my 18 y.o. grandson and his girlfriend on an all-day/late-night fishing expedition tomorrow, before they head off in different directions to college two days from now.
I've got good (cheap) ultra-light and light-weight rods/reels for our day fishing trip for LMB, SMB, and BG/RES. But, I've got to make sure my old closed face Johnson's and Shakespeare's are ready for tomorrow night's catfish fishing in my main pond. As I write this, I'm in the process of cleaning and lubing all of them. Then I'll put new high quality 12# or 18# test line on all of them before going and getting a bunch of large creek chubs with my $4 / 16' telescoping crappie jigging rod (fancy bamboo replacement pole, no reel).

Stick, I decided to splurge a few years ago and have a Revo as well and I love it, although since moving here last year my "normal" gear has taken a back seat to the "pond" gear. Hopefully your drag washers went bad because of constant and relentless use, with many a trophy and fish-fry's to show for it!

Yep keep it clean and occasional light lube. Loosen drag at the end of each fishing day. Pretty certain about Dwight and cats.

"Pretty certain about Dwight and cats."
If you say so.

Got it back on Friday morning. Everything is good. The parts list listed one washer. I figure they didn't put it in the first repair.
