I recently enlarged my tank to about 1.5 acres - presently it does not have any grass on the banks or dam area (I'm working on that) and the water is muddy. I did the gypsum test and it seems to clear up nicely with a very small amount of gypsum. I have noticed a strange green color (almost like green dye on an area about 20 ft long and 10 ft wide along the bank - if seems to follow the wind. Then just yesterday it seemed to have totally disappeared. Now this AM it is back. Does anyone know what this could be?? I took a stick to see if it had any substance to it but it just seems to be a green liquid floating on the muddy water - strange looking!!

Beststash,
It could be tree pollen...we get it like that in East Texas, but that was a month ago...more likely its a form of algae if it is on the surface. If it is in the water column, then is plankton, the good stuff that people want and sometimes fertilize the water to obtain.

I would also guess that this is planktonic algae. Gone in the A.M. and shows it's head later in the day would point towards this type of algae. Sometimes it will get a "green paint" look to it and may even have a septic type odor to it. My 2 cents...

I have the same thing in central Texas with a tank that has suspended clay. It almost looks like a paint spill but is no problem at all. My channels are doing fine and it goes away within one day. I don't have a clue what it is. Only know that in three years no problem for the fish.

Thanks everyone - it happened again yesterday, this time a lot more- and again today it is totally gone. I guess I will assume it is a "good thing". It is so dry for spring this year, I am already loosing water to evaporation. Seems just like yesterday that we were having rain everyday. I told the wife I think that last big earthquake threw the planet off and our summer seems to have started already. Hope not - I need some grass and hay SOON!!!!
