I was fishing at this pond the other day thats about 1 1/2 acres (not mine) and I saw a giant gold fish about 2 feet long swimming along the shore. My question is how could you catch it and why would anyone put a goldfish in a pond that big?

It was a koi (domestic carp with color) probably introduced by someone with a backyard garden pond.

In my mind you answered your own question.

I might add a few large goldfish to my pond
for exactly what you state...You Saw Them.

My albino tilapia get the most attention with people
saying "wow look at that fish swimming by"....
the kids love seeing a fish swim by and it's so much
easier to spot an albino tilapia or white/gold koi.

That may or may not be the reason the person put the one
in the pond you were at, but that's why I may throw a
few in my "pot of stew".

Fishing has never been about the fish....

Albino CC serve a similar purpose. Albino tinfoil barb can be fun in the warm months. They're cheap to buy and grow about 2" per month. If stocked at 2-3" in early June, by September they're 8"+. Because they're albino they show up. They're also lightening fast and slam pellets with gusto.

Not necessarily Bill. There are some large goldfish out there:

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Okay Round 1 - BBBuckeye sings & stings like a bee and jabs with -- the fish in the first picture is 16" maybe 18" long and not the 2ft as noted in the first post. Goldfish maximum listed length is 16" most are 12" long. http://member.guinnessworldrecords.com/records/natural_world/fantastic_pets/longest_goldfish.aspx

Next a few short pokes with ..... gold fish and carp will hybridize so if it is a hybrid is it a goldfish???

Now a hard right cross with ranting. . . . the mouth of the fish in 1st pic is typical goldfish mouth with terminal oblique features, however the mouth on the 2nd fish is lateral and protrusable as is typical of the old bugle mouthed carp - koi. CB1 appears woozy and is getting weak kneed - will he fall to the mat?

One last strong jab to the sensitive area:... the big hog gold-orange fish in the lower picture has an obvious fleshy barbel at the corner of the mouth, a distinct character of carp-koi. Goldfish have no barbels. Hybrid carpXgoldfish have small barbels.

TAKE THAT YOU HAPPY HOOSIER!!!!!

Ding, Ding, Ding. End of round 1 as Pez Condello tries to separate the flailing, insulting contestants.

Round 1 goes to the Bad boy but Cecil did make the bell. I predict he will dance a bit but deliver some nasty blows of his own. Betting is not allowed, tell em ref!!

Gee thanks Bob look what you started. grin I see what you're doing. You want me to p... off a moderator so I'll be banned. wink

Hybrid Bill? What kind of cockymanie crap is that?

I won't concede until CJ2005 weighs in. He's da man when it comes to cyprinid identification.

Btw Bill you do remember me kicking your butt when it came to your malarky about pinching air out of pellets right? "Pinching the air out causes them to sink." Yuk, yuk, yuk!

crazy

Ding, Ding Ding, BBBuckeye got dazed from jabs of CB1 in Round 2. He is still sore & fuming about air-in-the-pellets riff, not to even mention the wastebasket round cages cheap ambush.

Round three. Yea -- poke - poke - hybrid goldfish:
http://www.goldfishkeepers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=341

And another wild swing to smack anything in the way:

PS: that ring girl is really cute!.!! Where did Bob-O find her?

Agreed CJBS..but I find decent size albino catfish that won't be eaten are hard to come by. This past spring Overton's tried to get me some with the other stockers I ordered, but the decent size albino cats could not be found. How do you keep 2"-3" albino cats from getting eaten?

Put 'em in a cage and grow them out to 10"-12" before releasing them into the pond!

Thanks esshup, it looks like that may be the only way.
The pond is just a weekend place, but I guess for proper
growth they would need to eat more than just on weekends.
I suppose I could get a small feeder just for a cage.
I still hope to find 8-10 inch for sale somewhere.
We'll see...

If you can, I'd look into buying a cheap scatter feeder like they use for corn. Hang it over the cage and adjust it so it doesn't throw too much food. I know, it sounds simpler than it really is.

Bob,

I'm going to let Bill think he's right on this one and surprise him with a left handed uppercut. :-)

What me worry?

Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:"
"She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

How is this?

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/wild/monster-fish/articles/600-lb-goldfish-facts/

Quote:
600 lb. Goldfish Facts

Giant carp can grow up to 660 lbs and 10 feet long.

Giant carp live in only three Southeast Asia’s rivers, the Chao Phraya River, the Maeklong River and the Mekong River.

A giant carp is Cambodia’s national fish. A bas-relief of giant carp and fishermen can be found at the Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world’s largest religious structure.

I see what you are doing Hoosier Dead Fish Stuffer Baird - sneaky - trying to distract my attention to the topic so to you can slip in one of your sleazy, girly punches. It won't work for ole BBBuckeye (Dr Perca to you). Hoosier Stuffer - Now look what you've done you've angered the peanut gallery and you've got the audience throwing junk at us in the ring.

Shorty - I doubt that anyone in their right non-chemical influenced mind would mistake that fish for a goldfish. Let's give Andrew18 a little credit. At least Hoosier Baird's big old fat slobbery sewer mouthed carp was orange. CB1 was probably rubbin his hands together and salivating hoping he could 'mount' that big old orange scaled cow.

Geeze, I go on vacation to MN for a week and miss out on all this fun!

And Bill is right, tip fish is a goldfish. The bottom one is definitely a koi(fancy colored carp). The barbel alone gives that away.
