The dock is 8'x24' and recently topped with 3/4" plywood. I now want to seal and paint and would like any suggestions or better yet, what NOT to do smile

I've considered Rustoleum's RESTORE but now seeing some bad reviews e.g., get's too hot, peels after a year, etc., and very pricey!

Anyone used silica sand mixed in with paint for a non-slip surface?

Any and all suggestions are welcome! Brands, types, methods, etc....

Thanks!

Keith

Go to a Sherwin Williams store and buy a container or 2 of shark bite. Mix that with the paint. Better than sand - it's light enough so that it stays in suspension a LOT longer.

I have used sand mixed in with paint. Used it on our hay wagons. Works excellent. Nothing funner than trying to hang on for dear life while going up/down hills and stacking hay too!!

I like oils (don't mean oil paints either) that soak in for the simple reason it won't peel up. But don't know if that is to feasible with plywood. Is it an outdoor/marine grade ply?

Astra turf?, but that may hold moisture to promote rotting the wood.

edit-- esshup reminded me that when I used sand, I dusted the wet surface after the paint was applied. Not mixed in the can.

Esshup, are you referring to Sharkgrip? Thanks for the tip, I looked it up and it looks to have some good reviews and certainly within budget. The shark bites I used when I installed my water softener wink

FNC, I have a great resource for some good quality artificial turf. If used, I would seal and paint first, then glue down the turf (and no seams). If done correctly would it still hold moisture promoting the wood rot? The flipside may be less weather elements directly on the finished plywood with a good turf on it?

My biggest concern is safety from getting slippery.

Here's what I'm working with and thanks for your replies:

Oh now Loretta what's wrong with slipping off a dock? You haven't lived until you've done it. Been there done that. grin I did it right before electroshocking one of my ponds. Bill Cody got a big kick out of it!

A friend's dad who was in the Navy told me a regular prank was to push unsuspecting sailor's off a dock when they were at a port of call. Said it was blast as long as it wasn't you.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Yep, that's the stuff. I used it in the 40 or so gallons of concrete sealer that I applied a couple of years ago. Like ice if it's wet, but not with that stuff in it.

I used a decking product that was half stain but not quite paint that soaks into the wood and yet looks good. We once had a lake cottage with a 40 foot slat pier. Every spring we and everyone else on the lake would roller paint the decks, either on land or set up on the water, with latex paint, just on top. These piers lasted for ever it seemed.

AstroTurf looks kinda redneck yacht club to me. Unless we're talkin about some fancier stuff than what I'm thinking

I mixed in some very light shark grip type stuff into the deck areas when I repainted my gheenoe, good grip even with fish blood on the deck. I would choose a lighter color due to heat, but I'm in FL.

Thanks Scott, I think that's the route I'll go. Too many disadvantages with artificial turf down the road.

Have a great weekend and I hope all goes well on Saturday!

So bummed I couldn't swing it cry So I'll be painting the dock instead.

I was thinking about your plywood and what you want to do. Plywood has always been a problem for outdoors, at least for me it is. Doesn't hold up well, and will flake up creating splinters. I suppose a heavy paint may seal it and create a heavy protective layer. However, a buddy of mine built an arched bridge over his creek and its plywood. Forgive my lack of knowledge in what you call the product he used. It was for roofing, in rolls that were about 4' wide. It has the grit in it for no-slip. It works really well. Quick, easy, and not expensive. It also creates that protective water barrier that will be needed for plywood.

FNC, are you referring to just basic roofing felt?

I'd almost bet that he's talking about what I call 80# rolled roofing material.

I am 99% sure it's what Esshup is calling it. I will try contacting him today to find out.

So you're referring to the rolled roofing opposed to the underlayment? If so, I don't know how friendly the granules would be on bare feet or durability (chairs, foot-traffic, etc.) in the hot sun.

I would have preferred composite decking boards and still might at some point. For now I just need to get it sealed before we get any rain, and for cost the Shark Grip sounds most feasible in the topcoat.

Just options...If you start getting splinters before you can get to upgrading it, you will have a few back-up ideas. Dwight has a plywood dock IIRC, but I think he started with high-tech ply. He has a nice thread on it somewhere.

I ended up using a package of Dutch Boy Anti-skid additive in Dutch Boy Skid Resistant porch and floor latex satin enamel. 2 gallons covered the 8x24 dock very well (with some left over) and the extra anti-skid additive added a great no-slip texture and it's gentle on bare feet. I didn't know how skid-resistant the paint itself would be but the way it turned out I'm very glad I included the additional additive. So thanks for the tip on the skid-resistant additive!

I didn't want to go too light or too dark, but I can attest that the dock does NOT look like the color-chip I selected shocked

Now if I had any artistic abilities at all I would figure out a way to have the Pond Boss logo fill that dock! (if that's allowed)
