I am planning on adding 6 SMB half log spawning structures to my pond; is thier any certain type of log / wood that would be best?

I plan to use log that are 8" - 12" wide and 4' - 5' long.

I would call up the Pond Boss headquarters and ask about ordering back issues that have the series of articles written about SMB. They are invaluable for what you are trying to research.

Half-logs or long planks will work. It is thought by one observer that the starter rock or base structure is a more important feature for SMB selecting the nest site and spawning than the half-log item. I read this in the following excellent blog item about the 4th or 5th section down in the page about "Spawning Benches Do They Work":
